A shotgun that fits

I’ve been shooting a 28” browning maxus for the last 8 years. When I bought the gun it fit me great. I shot well with it. Rarely missed… I’ve gotten almost a decade older. A little fatter (6’ 210lbs now). The last two seasons I seem to have gotten worse with it. Doesn’t swing well for me. Doesn’t line up well when i shoulder it. Almost like it feels too big on me. I shot terrible on dove opener today. I’m in the market to change up guns this year before duck season. I know I like the sight line on the A5 but I’m really not sure what I’m looking for as far as what fits. Any advice is appreciated.

Does your gun have stock spacers in it?

It has the factory spacers in it and I have no idea where the shims went that came with it

All premium brands have shims so the gun fits the shooter.
Find them or order some.

When is the last time you got your eyes checked?

Once I messed with shims and fit my gun, it was a game changer.

How to test gun fit: close your eyes and shoulder the gun with them closed.
With you head down on the stock, open your eyes. If you’re looking down the rib properly, the gun fits. If you don’t see the rib, seeing snowmen for the beads, or seeing something else, you need to work on your shims.

Yea I would def order some shims if u can’t find them. I would shim it first before going buy a new gun. I used to not shim shotguns but since I started shooting more the professionals I have changed my mind. Shimming mine have made me a good shooter into a force to be reckoned with!

I found I shoot much more accurately if there is bottled water in the cooler instead of beer

I realized one thing after i posted this is that I had put a heavier sling on the gun. Took it off and it feels better but I’m definitely going to try and figure out how and why this thing no longer fits me before I spend money on another gun.

I did yesterday. One of my friends had a brand new a400 on the dove field. Really doesn’t feel much different than the maxus.
I need to shoulder some when I’m not in as foul a mood as I was yesterday. We had birds everywhere and I couldn’t have hit water if I fell out of a boat. Most frustrating hunt of my life.

There shouldn’t be any reason for buying a new gun. Browning makes shims and stock spacers to adjust the fit. I’d find it hard to believe you would need to do any cutting on the stock if you’re 6’ tall.
I would take it to a competent gunsmith who could tell you wether or not it fits you right.

Find a place that will fit the gun for you. I know there are several places that do it in Texas. Just find where all the clay guys bring their guns. Those guys can work wonders.

Could also be your choke and shell combo
I know a lot of people buy those cheap 7/8 oz number 8s from wal mart and go hunt. I would shoot your gun with the exact same shells and choke you used yesterday just to see how they pattern

Just bought a new A5 Lightning that came with all the shims and spacers. Had to have the round knob grip lol
It came with six shims, three for just adjusting drop, and three reversible ones that adjust cast and drop for either right of left hand shooters, and a couple spacers for length of pull.
Never really thought about it before with guns that I have had for years but they sure made a difference in the way the new one fits.

This was my first thought. I, like most people, started having some vision issues when I turned 50. Got an exam and was given a RX for glasses. Bifocals. Could not get used to them. Got a RX for contacts, a little better but could not shoot a shotgun for shite with them. I have managed 9 years now with readers from Walmart and can still shoot a shotgun without any kind of RX.
Used to be a rule of thumb that a shotgun should fit firmly in the crook of your elbow with your forefinger comfortably at the trigger. I know for a certainty that a stock Citori fits me perfectly because I can hit with it. It makes a difference. I can hit with most shotguns but that old Japanese Citori is the best one I ever owned and I use it almost exclusively and have for about 20 years.

Most trap/skeet and sporting clays places have someone who knows how to fit a gun....at least someone who can tell you if its close or not. Most of them would do it if you shot a few rounds.
