re: Advice needed: Venice Louisiana offshore forecast

I’ve been offshore fishing for 45 years and most people who I’ve seen get seasick had one thing in common; they were dehydrated. From either hanging one on the previous night and not replenishing, or from drinking cold drinks and not enough water.
When I bring people who are at risk of getting sick, I suggest they start drinking plenty of water the day prior, then again when they wake up and throughout the day.
I’m not saying this is always the cause, but I’ve seen people who normally get sick, not get sick after hydrating.

When I got seasick the first time I was not thinking about it at all. I had not been drinking the night before or on the trip. I was also pretty well hydrated. It just happened. That first time was bad enough though that I do think about it every time I get on a boat to go offshore or even near inshore. I try to be prepared for it though with medicine and the patch. I love to fish but hate being sick.

We have been married 34 years i think... there have been a few times when I just pull over and get in the back seat, and tell her she can drive the rest of the way. It is amazing how mad that makes her
I did that once headed west on I-10 around Laffy. Said “you drive”. About 5 miles and 10 minutes later I got tired of being in fear of getting rear ended by all the 18 wheelers flying by while she went 55. I apologized and took back over.
Those big cats make the ride soft. You will still bounce and roll. If in doubt, go with patch. Real seasickness is nothing to frick with.

I’d take a regular Dramamine the night before and a non-drowsy that morning. That’s my routine and it’s undefeated. I think once the thought creeps in your head, you’re screwed.

I don't get car sick, and my wife never drives. She only rides co-pilot and tells me how to drive, while she screams at all our near-death experiences and saves our lives by pushing the emergency hazard button on the dash.
Damnit! My wife is a two-timing bitch!! I finally got the proof!!

I always take a Dramamine when I get to the dock and have some on the boat to take midway thru the day. As long as I have air moving on my face I’m good. Been through some rough seas in some pretty small boats.
Just look at the horizon. It won’t be moving.

Had a great day. Snapper limits (5 of us, so 20 big snapper) Several amberjack caught and released, two swords. Seas were not bad, nobody used the patch, nobody got sick. I felt a little queazy when i got heated up around 11am so i used the deck wash hose to wet my head, chugged a couple bottles of water, ate a snack, sat in the shade for a few minutes, all good after that. It was a cool experience for sure.

How was the water? We did some drifts for Swords in Mississippi Canyon last weekend, and the water was worse than if we had been fishing the pilings on the Sunshine Bridge. Puke green, including in the prop wash. Actually had better water when we came back in to do our snapper drops. My buddy pushed out about 60 miles (out of Fourchon) trying to find the rip and never got out of green water.

We passed the rip line and it looked like deep blue toilet water.

Nice! congrats on the swords.
I went saturday from cypremort point. Rougher than predicted. 10-15kts and steady 4ft waves with short period. It would have been decent if they were spread out at 7 seconds as predicted.
We caught our 20 snappers and a 40lb cobia and got back early.

It's 13 miles from the launch at quintana canal to the pass, then another 40 miles out to get to 80ft depths. Then it gradually drops off over the next 50 miles.
You will need to run 98 miles out of the pass to get to the 100 fathom line, and rocks for groupers and deep dropping.

Same thing Friday out of Ft. Morgan. It sucked early and only got worse, like a washing machine all day. 7 sec period my arse, more like 3.5 ft at 2-3 seconds from all directions. Weather guessers suck. Got our 4 man limit of ars but it was not easy and we picked through 100 fish to get a limit. Lots of shorts. We got the snot kicked out of us all day. When I turned the boat back to the NW for a 25 mile run back to the hill I could only make 15 mph and damn near drowned from the non stop spray
Boat stayed on the trailer Sat & Sunday, winds were worse than Friday.

Debating on scopolamine patch.
If you are even debating using scopolamine then you should use it. Being seasick is not fun.
The patch will work in about 20-30 min, but if you put it on after you get seasick, then you will still feel kind of crappy all day - just not sick.
Those patches last for about 3 days. Some people put them on the night before, but honestly, put it on early in the morning before the trip because the drymouth they cause after about 12-16 hours kins of sucks. And make sure you wash your hands really well after putting the patch on. Scopolamine can easily rub from your hands to your eyes and it will dialate your pupils and temporarily screw up your vision.

OP, glad you had a great trip.
One of the main things that I do is to keep my eyes up.
When people look down to tie a hook or bait a hook or whatever, that's when the first pangs of seasickness hits.
I've learned to tie a hook without looking.
