The illuminator (or whatever it is), It that only for night vision/thermal?

infrared illuminator is for night vision. Digital night vision really needs them in order to be effective.

It is. Built it from a frame, slide and barrel. I have really enjoyed working on it.
The only hard part to me was the cerakote. I have a thread with several pics.

Correct, although it has a visible laser, I only have it for when im wearing my night vision, it has an illuminator and IR laser.
the visible laser is handy though because it is a slave laser, meaning I can sight in the visible during the day or even at night, without needing to wear my NVGs and the IR laser will move right with it.
