I’d like to catch some catfish with Lent coming up and I was wondering if y’all have any public spots you know of.

From the bank or do you have a boat?

The Amite River and all the creeks that feed it, have nothing but catfish in them.

This, if you can find a spot right now with the river rising due to the snow melt up north.

Also, if you can, catch some perch and put them in a bucket with an aerator to keep them alive and use circle hooks to hook them through the middle of the back near the top row of fins.

Use at lease a 2 oz. lead sinker and cast upriver and let the current carry the line downstream so it is out in front of you when it settles. Put the pole down in a situation where it is upright and can't be pulled into the river if a big cat hits it hard.

I use either rod holders I pound a spike on them into the ground or pile some rip-rap up and place something on the bottom part of the rod to hold it in place.

Then just sit back and wait. I've caught some beautiful flatheads with live bait in the river. Last time I went I left with 4 cats that weighed in excess of 80 lbs. total. That's a lot of filets in the freezer.

Hard to believe, but I'm told the river is one of the least polluted waters around. Certain lakes are the worst offenders. I guess ones with little flow into and out of them.

Dilution is the solution.

It is no mystery that flatheads do love to bite on live bait. I've not caught many when using big worms, fresh bait shrimp or even cut bait.

There's a spot I love to fish in Lower St. Bernard Parish, but it is now underwater and it will be sometime in the summer before the river goes down low enough to get to it again. I usually bring 3 poles, live and dead bait and leave with a catch of channel, blue and flathead cats.

The Mississippi River is at 34.08 ft this morning, at BTR. This has catfish in the wooded area near the levee.
The Mississippi River is cleaner now than it was back in the 70’s. Back then, they’d dump everything in it.

I’ve eaten a bunch of catfish out of there. In my younger days, my uncle had wood traps set in the river, he use to catch River shrimp, ate a many pounds of them.

I'd bet it would be might near impossible to chunk a night crawler on a fish finder rig in any body of water in Baton Rouge or within 1000 miles or more of Baton Rouge and not catch some catfish.....

We did this in the 80s. Bought live crawfish(were cheap then) and peeled the tails. Found a nice spot to walk over the levee off river rd. Got bites hand over fist. Lots of perfect little eaters.

I fish a bit north of BR on the river bank. I'll also run limb lines. For limb lines I bait with live bream, zote soap, and hog liver. When I'm bank fishing I normally use worms or live bream.

I have 4 Lew's cat daddy combos and some cheap rod holders that stick in the dirt. I put a lil bell/light on the end of each rod. I'll have my wife drop me off with a 12 pack of beer and a camp chair a few hours before dark. I'll normally fish until midnight or so. I've caught the most fish on worms. Biggest on live bream. It's a relaxing, low effort way to fish.

ETA: I haven't figured out what makes them bite or not bite. I've gone 4 or 5 hours without a bite to suddenly have all 4 rods get hit and keep getting hit as fast as I can haul the fish in and cast back out. It'll shut down after an hour and go back to no bites. Also had nights where I was steadily pulling fish in every 30 or 45 minutes for the whole trip. Few nights I've gone and not had a bite. I catch the most when the water is falling.

the Ms river is cleaner than it has been in a century. It’s one of the few bodies of water in La with no fish consumption advisories

One of my most productive days for catching a lot of catfish was when I just sat on the top of the levee and cast into the batture near where the tree line started.

There was at least a 40 ft. wide area from the base of the levee to the tree line and it was holding about 5 ft. of water above normal. I caught a couple dozen cats with a mix of channel and blues on big earthworms from my compost pile and fresh shrimp market bait.

Anyone ever caught Bar Pit Bass? We caught a bunch one night. Had an artificial bait that looked like a shrimp fly.
