Which would be the overall better for personal protection? Not interested in hearing suggestions for other calibers.

S&W for bears
Glock for people
44 mag is challenging to shoot accurately, quickly.
There are better options though, so despite not wanting to hear it, someone is going to suggest something else.

Personal preference
If I am going glock, I would go for the G29/G23 or G26/G43/G27.

"Personal protection".... do you mean inside your house?, in your vehicle?, concealed carry?, open carry, protection from what? people, zombies, vehicles, animals???????
of the 2 i would choose the clock, but neither are a great choice

I have HK’s compact 357sig and it’s a blast to shoot. Literally. It gets fatiguing after a couple of boxes…but that’s good since ammo can be expensive. It’s a flat shooting round that leaves the barrel in haste. The casing shape seems perfect to feed out of the magazine.
The only downsides are the price of ammo and the difficulty to get back on target due to the muzzle flash and release of pressure. The flash-bang is both incredibly fun and a little much for an indoor range.
I’d let you shoot this one…

Such an odd set of choices. If you’re going to carry it I’d wager that the Glock 32 will be more comfortable

This is like comparing a camaro to a dump truck in a drag race.
357 sig is vastly better for protection against people. Far more shootable, higher capacity, better ammo selection for that purpose, gun is far easier to carry, etc etc.
A model 29 44 mag is a horrible choice. Even loaded with 44 special self defense ammo, the gun is gigantic and youll get tired of carrying it. 44 magnum, forget about it. Way too much recoil and noise and flash and horsepower for no reason. There are some select loads that might start getting rifle-like terminal performance but there aren't many to my knowledge and the recoil and noise are still there. Most loads are going to over penetrate and deposit all that energy (for which you paid a high price in recoil and muzzle blast) into the backstop.
Im a die hard wheel gun fan, but a model 29 is near the bottom of the list of what I'd want to carry for personal protection. Fantastic hunting revolver though.

^^I agree.
The 357 Sig is really good personal protection against people, but of course, that's what is was designed to do. At the time, the 357 Mag was the #1 round for personal protection. The Sig was designed to do the same thing but in a semi-auto. Of course, 9mm rounds have improved greatly since then so I'm not sure if the 357 Sig/357 Mag are still superior for self defense or not.

I carry a 357 sig, but if I were doing it over I'd get a 9mm. All of the 357 sig self defense ammo is downloaded to 1350fps, i suspect to allow the use of the same bullets that are used in the 9mm loads. So now what you get is 100 more fps, 2 fewer rounds, and piss poor ammo availability.
Same for 357 mag, there aren't many 1450 fps 125gr sjph loads left out there. Federal 357b has been discontinued and I think rem golden saber is the only one left.

Are these the only two choices on FB marketplace?
Interesting matchup, here.

Mind filling us in on why these are the only two possible options for you? Inquiring minds would like to know.

The S&W would have to be from the mid 80s or earlier (as almost all S&W revolvers should be). They produced a lot of crap after.

Good infö. I didn't know the Sig was being downloaded.

Yep. To my knowledge there isn't a full power 1450fps 357sig load available anymore except boutique stuff, and since the 357 sig is actually .355 they are almost certainly using 9mm self defense bullets meant for 1250fps muzzle velocity at most. I think the main reason they are all downloaded now is that 1450fps muzzle velocity requires a bullet made for that, and 357 sig is the only caliber it would work in, and hardly any agencies issue that caliber anymore. Easier to just download it to 1350 and use 9mm+p bullets.
Its not that a 125gr HST at 1350 is bad, it's just that it isn't any real difference from a 9mm+p, and it has a laundry list of disadvantages relative to a 9mm. Damned shame too, because I think when loaded right, 357 sig is probably the perfect duty caliber. The ammo market has killed it off.
