"Correct. Cougars/mountain lions do not possess the gene to have a black coat. Jaguars, which at one time had a range that extended into SWLA do."
If these Jaguars had been in LA at one point in time then I do not see why it wouldn't be possible for them to have created a mixed litter with a Cougar, especially considering the odds of a Jaguar finding a cougar for a mate would be more likely than that of finding another Jaguar. If that has happened only ONCE then the possibilities of creating more litters like that are endless (dominant/recessive traits being passed down generation to generation). Even if one of the cubs from a hybrid litter looked like a cougar, it could still reproduce with another pure cougar and possibly pass down the black trait. Depending upon how dominant the black trait is in a hybrid, couldn't that trait remain dormant but still be passed down for generations, revealing itself in a much later litter? IF you completely rule out the possibility of "domesticated cat" (which could not maul livestock) This could possibly explain why some cat sightings report different bone structures, i.e. smaller heads, etc. I haven't researched this so my opinion is not right or wrong, I just believe this is very possible and seems like a viable explanation. I myself know several people who have sighted black cats in L.A., I know a man who saw one 30-40 years ago on the Barton's property at Beech Grove Plantation in Clinton, LA while fishing.

People report black panthers because they either are lying, or they saw something that looked black but was not. In low light, a cougar's fur could very well look black. I've seen deer that I thought were black in low light. Not only do black panthers not exist, they never have.

If anything jaguars have been known to kill and eat mountain lions. Inter breeding would not occur. My deceased uncle/godfather had a guide service for hunting both animals in Mexico during the late 50's to the late 60's. I think he would know what he would be talking about.
FWIW, he saw two cougars while turkey hunting in the Honey Island Swamp during the 1980's. Cougars have had a small population in LA long before the LDWF said so.

Thanks for clearing that up, like I said, I had no idea whether or not something like that was possible. Hypothetically speaking, if they did breed, I thought it seemed like a good explanation. But, since that's not possible (extremely unlikely) I see what you're saying.

Amazing so many folks say they "exist", yet with the thousands of trail cameras up and running in Louisiana, not one has ever been captured and verified through a photograph or video.

The mountain lion has been showing up in Louisiana for a relative few years, they have been photoed, shot out of trees, and scat and tracks verified.
Black panthers have been the subject of tales for DECADES, there has never been a photo, confirmation in anyway, never been one hit by a car. Why does everyone insist that they see them? They do not exist.

There's one that lives down the street from me, drives a Range Rover. Various sightings are reported daily and I'm certain this cougar is on the prowl.

Seems to be a very popular habitat for todays cougar.

this is valid and I think is going to apply to the whole Bigfoot/skunk ape thing as well as other wilderness legends...
I personally hope we get proof of living Gigantopithecus groups

LDWF are wrong about most every issue. fricker's ruined Caney Lake in Jackson Parish by releasing 250,000 grass eating carp or whatever they are.
better go dig and see who was really pushing that.. the biologists did not want that many....

I have had two experiences with Cougar.
* 1995 a family get together at my grandmother's house in Shongaloo, La. We were all sitting on the back porch right at dark drinking coffee and playing dominos. We heard an unmistakable scream of a cougar. Still sends chills down my spine. People around the vicinity heard it for about 3 days.
*2002 Hunting in PlainDealing, LA looking down a large shooting lane. We had a giant plot of green turnips down the lane which provided an excellent contrast when a deer or other animal walked in the food plot right at dark. I was watching 3 deer eat in the plot right at dark, when they all got spooked and ran off. I was scratching my head wondering what caused them to run like that when i see an animal slip out of the woods not 30 yards in front of my stand ( ground blind mind you). This animal was 100% feline. It was huge. It looked as though it had a rabbit in its mouth as it crept up the lane and cut into the woods to my right. My brother saw the same thing the next evening on the same stand. People said we were full of shite at the camp, but 2 days after my brother saw his sighting, 3 trucks pulled in from our neighboring hunting lease and told us to be careful because they saw a cougar...
there ya go

That's the one I was referring to on page 2. Yes we have mountain lions.
No we don't have black ones. No matter what you may have thought you saw. That's a matter of the angle of the light. Yes, they can look black. They aren't.

Well, I've seen two in my life. One was at night and definitely appeared to be blonde to brown in the headlights. The other was on Bayou Cocodrie Federal reserve near Ferriday. It was the first year they opened it back up, must've been around the mid 90's. This one was early season around 4pm and it was black as the ace of spades or appeared to be.
A good friend of mine is the forester there, and he said the same thing, "officially cougars do not exist in LA, and if they did they would not be black."
BTW, does the Alexandria zoo still have the Florida black panther. I saw it several times and on the cage, it says Florida Black Panther. Too many respectable people I know have seen black panthers in LA.
