yeah, diamond is pretty much the top of the line of the cheaper foods, the lamb is rice is very good. Much better than science diet, eukanuba, pedigree, etc. Here is a good site that analyzes the dog food. As you can see Taste of the wild is up there near the top. It is also made by diamond. You can call them and speak to a vet and they will make recommendations and send you a big box of samples.

Good Lord yall buy some expensive shite

I draw the line somewhere far short of $45 for a 25lb bag.

I paid a lot of money for my dog.

And it's a 30lb bag.

But seriously, I haven't done any comparison shopping lately, but as far as grain-free dog food goes, Taste of the Wild was by far the best bang for your buck when I started buying it a few years ago.

And Science Diet isn't much better than Ol' Roy, unless they've changed the formula. The main ingredient used to be corn. Basically just a rip off peddled by Vets who get a kick back for selling it.

What do you look for in a good dog food?

I've always fed science diet and my dogs like it and look good. But I have no idea what analysis is good for dog foods. Course my dogs get all the table scraps available. None of that gets thrown away.

kinda what I was thinking...if I ever find myself having to spend more to feed my dog than I do myself, lets just say his future is not looking too bright...

First of all, let me say, if anybody wants to feed the cheapest food out there, I won't try to stop them. We raised a lot of dogs on walmart dog food when I was growing up. But, in my opinion, it's a lot like raising kids on chicken mcnuggets - not that great but they'll live. And we have one dog with allergies to grains, and another that I paid close to $2k for, so we wanted a grain-free dog food. Generally speaking, a good dog food will have the main ingredient(s) being a real meat.

Look here for info on dog foods:

We used the blue buffalo for a while too, but settled on taste of the wild eventually.

all of their products are excellent but if your dog is allergic to grain you have to keep in mind most animal based foods still have residual grain -

IAMS KO is kangaroo meat with no grain

How do you mean? Most better dog foods don't use stomachs and intestines, if that's what you're getting at.

I didn't read the whole thread so SIAP, but I started feeding my dog chicken, eggs and some game.(Whole skinned and gutted squirrels or venison bones/organs)

Chicken leg quarters/backs/necks from some place like Sam's are much cheaper than quality dog food. I give him raw eggs and organ meat occasionaly too. Maybe a little bacon drippings now and again. I can't wait for the Thanksgiving super deals on frozen turkey. I am going to fill my freezer.

Last month I bought a whole pork loin, bone in. That thing was huge. And after getting the loin, tenderloin, and ribs out for the family, there was plenty meaty bones left for the dog. He eats those and the chicken and crunches them up fine and digests them completely.

I am scooping up about 1/4 the poop I was with Purina One, his teeth are cleaner, his breath is fresher, and his coat and energy are perfect.

One thing that I have recently learned is how wild canines will go straight for the organs and eat that first. The flesh comes after, and a lot of it is left for the buzzards.

Oh...and marrow...my dog loves loves loves marrow.
