I'll preface my remarks by saying I've fly fished for close to 50 years. The simple rubric is this:
Freshwater - Rod.
Saltwater - Reel.

Sure it is, but any prolonged exposure to saltwater is going to toast that reel. So will dropping it in the water and leaving it for 2 minutes while you're pulling your food or drinks out of your pack after wading for miles.
Its stainless and has never been used in freshwater....its 20 years old and I have replaced the drag discs in 2 times I think...maybe 3. Its about as impervious to salt water as a reel gets. It stayed in a plywood locker about 8 feet above sea level on a dock in a covered marina in the Carribean for 5 and a half years and aluminum would oxidize under that dock in about 18 months and more or less cease to exist. It stayed in a locker at the dry storage marina where I kept my boat in Stuart Florida, probably 10 feet above sea level and 30 yards from Manatee Pocket on the St. Lucie River for about 7 years....and works like it ought to.

I've been fly fishing reds for about 10 years now. I fish every week in the fall an winter. Most of my reels are very cheap (Maxcatch) and I have only had one fail. (drag washers failed). I'm not getting in the water with them though. I do have one setup that has a nicer rod with quality fly line. What I would say is the rod and fly line make the combo. If you cant cast accurately to the fish, the $600 reel doesn't matter.
Small thread hyjack:
I've been looking to treat myself to a good 8wt for reds(mostly slot reds). Any recommendations? I doubt I can tell the difference in a $1000 rod compared to a $500 rod. What is just one of yall best casting rods/flylines for chunking a redfish fly at some winter time reds.

Check out the new TFO Moment. One of my good friends has their guide deal or whatever and he's really high on that rod right now. I'd also look at buying used on Microskiff or FB Marketplace. I see Loomis Crosscurrents come up all the time and my friend was just able to pick up a basically brand new 4pc 8wt Sector for $600.
Line is preference, but I would stick with SA or Royal Wulff. I use Wulff Bermuda Triangle Taper on all of my reels. It's versatile, durable, and you won't need to swap it out based on what you're doing.

I'm slowly replacing all of my rods with Winston Air 2 Max. They're pretty incredible. The 8'6" 7wt and 8wt are awesome rods.
Using either Wulff BTT or SA Bonefish Plus for everything 6-12wt
That said, do what bluemoons said earlier in the thread and buy off FB marketplace or one of the fly fishing forums. It's almost impossible to find the winstons used but can regularly find Sectors and NRX+

I have heard really good things about those.
Costco actually had the Air 2 on their website a year or so ago for $750 in 5 weight but I didn't "need" a new rod at the time so I didn't pull the trigger. wish I had.

The only thing that scares me is the Extra fast action of the TFO Moment or any other fast action fly rod. I bought a Allen Volant a year ago and it was just too stiff for me to throw. That may be because its a shity rod, probably because Id was just doing it all wrong, but I could not get any distance out of it.
After watching a few Videos online, i may go with the TFO Mangrove. Looks like its a little more forgiving.

For the faster rods I typically use SA bonefish plus since it's a heavier for weight line. Slower rods get the Wulff BTT.
You could probably find somewhere locally that sells the TFO moment to go cast and try out

Freshwater, I'd say spend more on the rod.
Saltwater, I'd say spend more on the reel.
This is a generalization and specific circumstances would likely change this, but if you are starting out, that's what I'd tell you.
Let me start out by saying I do not fly fish and have only tried it a few times without anyone to talk me through anything, and no YouTube at the time.
But what you are saying seems logical. I would think you will need to spend on the rod either way, but more on the reel for saltwater. If consistently targeting a particular species, I would think that may move you in one direction or the other.
An old high school buddy, Jim Gray, is a pretty well-known fly fisherman in the Texas Hill Country, but he recently moved to Florida to care for an aging parent. Look him up on YouTube, and he may have something to help you out. He does sell flys he makes as well.

For panfish. Not so much with saltwater

Pretty accurate assessment, especially for a non-fly fisherman.

Since we’re on the subject of fly fishing, sad to see the passing of Flip Pallot. Legend.
