Has anyone planted these? Looking at some online forums they say that up north, they dont drop their fruit until rotten. That would just feed squirrels and racoons so it wouldnt be a good deal.

The ones I'm looking at are at Clegg's, 5 gal, $55 ea

TIA

I have no idea about that variety you are looking at but we have a LOT of wild ones at my place. If you want to come get some in late September/early October you are welcome to. I have successfully potted the seeds and grown and planted them quite a bit. They are slow growing however.

That's crazy to pay that for one.

I bought from this company this year:

Willis Orchards

They are bare root. I planted 5 or 6 of them. They are all growing. The good thing about planting bare root as opposed to 5 gallon is price and also, it will take a 5 gallon tree 3-4 yrs to really start growing. A small bare root will catch it in a few years.

Mine are just plain american persimmon.

Most of the Fuyu or Jiro persimmons do not drop.

many state agriculture departments sell bulk seedlings cheaply. You could get 100 seedling persimmon delivered for around 100 bucks from several of them.

Most only ship in the spring.

Many also sell varieties of native plums and other good wildlife plants.

In my experience, I am more limited by labor/time in planting than by cost.

You will not see fruit production for a few years with anything that comes in a pot you can carry, and most will require a bit more time than that.

Iowa shipped to me in Louisiana, North Carolina had to ship in-state, I believe Virginia and Arkansas are the same (in-state).

planted 8 Fuyu Persimmons (5-8 ft tall, 5 gal) and 2 fruiting pear trees that were a little taller this past weekend

All in one grove where we placed them in full sun, seven giant steps away from each other in rows.

Hope they survive!

Protect the trunks of your new fruit trees or else you’ll lose some to the deer rubbing on them. The deer at our old place in centreville MS much preferred native persimmons to the fuyu although the fuyu persimmons would sometimes stay on the tree even into December.

When they dropped, did the deer like them?
