What would you be looking for before you take it out of the store?

Psa midlength with classic lower.

I’ve seen that gun school guy use tools to inspect.

But are there ways to visually inspect before taking out of building?

::::::::::::update below.

So here is what I am talking about. I got the upper yesterday in the mail. I took it out and just looked at it and would have noticed this before I even started this thread. The Delta ring is cockeyed and the hand guard is not seated correctly. I took a picture of of it and I’m not sure it does it justice, but the angle is off. And before I go messing with it. I wanted to ask y’all about it. Should I just bring it back and ask them to inspect it as well

Confusing post. Is this a used rifle? I've never seen anyone inspect a new firearm at purchase.

5 gallon bucket full of rocks is a must have if you want to test fire it in the store.

Pretty sure homie created a new account after that post

quote:

know what the value OUGHT to be, and dont pay any more for it. Google for places like thehighroad.org, jousterforums, glocktalk, thefiringline and ask there. Be sure to use a bore light and look it over carefully. I guarantee you that they didn't pay more than 1/2 of current retail to get it and you should not pay more than 3/4 of retail for it. If you do, you'll have lost money on the deal. If you can, take a 5 gallon bucket of gravel and 6", 3 ft long, thick walled steel pipe to fire down into. Put rags atop the gravel, cover the top end of the pipe with stretched and wired inner tube rubber (like a drum head) cut a slit into the rubber, insert the barrel. If it's a longarm, you'll have to tilt the bucket a bit. 15" of gravel will stop 12 ga slugs or 308 ball ammo, guaranteed. It will not make much noise at all, actually.

Pull the BCG and look for signs of wear, plenty of videos on what to look for. You could bring a pen light or short smart phone mount snake light camera to inspect the barrel.

None of this is what I'd call intrusive and the store should have no problem allowing you to look it over. If they do, it's a flag.

New. Buy it, it will have a warranty if there are issues.

Used. IF you know what you are doing, I would pull the BCG and inspect for wear/cracked locking lugs. Flashlight the upper receiver for any weird wear or cracks. Check the barrel to receiver and barrel nut to make sure its tight (I found a loose one on a used rifle once assembled by some dude in his garage). Check lower receive for cracks around push pins and trigger/hammer pin holes. Check buffer tube and nut for tightness/wobble. Check iron sights (if present) for being complete and serviceable. Grab front sight/gas block and make sure it doesn't move on barrel. If it's a precision rifle, you might want to borescope and go/no-go the chamber.

If you don't know what you are doing, don't do all that. You won't know what you are looking at and will look like an idiot if you crack the rifle open and can't reassemble it.

So I’m not going into the depth.

Just asking for what you look for in a visual inspection. Not tool aided.

I wouldnt worry about the delta ring, just grab it and pull it down a few times. Its probably just tight.

Thank you.

And I wanna be honest with you. I had to look up the name of the part.

I did not know what to call the Delta ring before I looked it up an hour ago.

So that’s what you’re dealing with here is somebody who is owned an AR 15 for 10 years. Shot it 20 times. Never really delved into breaking them down or learning more about them.

Just wanna be honest with you.

Its all good, that spring could be super tight with those new handguards.

Theyll "break in" over time. Id just work that ring a bit with the handguards installed and it might seat better.

But really unless it aggravates you, id pay no attention to it whatsoever as it really doesnt impact the function of the rifle at all.

Here's a video on how the delta ring and handguard work.
Probably just need to work it in place a little bit.

It could also be that the hand guard has a burr on it or something. But it isn't worth worrying about.
