quote:who are these experts? Because If it is random biologist you’ve called they have no clue. Unless they are constantly working/living on property for a big hunting club full time take whatever info for future harvest with a grain of salt. I’ve had 6 different ones visit my properties and only 1 actually left the camp table from a cup of coffee to actually go out and look and all he did was count deer trails. Mind you I have invited these same people out during deer/turkey season to hunt and examine the wildlife and they’ve refused. “The whole you need to shoot 40-50 does every year on 1000 acres” story doesn’t fly with me anymore.
I’m sure the experts know what they are doing but it makes me wonder

saw four 3 1/2 year old bucks all season. I held out for a 4+ year old deer and never saw one.
I’ll be the first to admit that I am not well versed in deer hunting….but how the hell can you tell the difference in a 3 1/2 year old deer versus one that is 4 years old?

I don’t know who “the experts” are BUT someone is making the rules/laws on bag limits.

Jackson, La.
Same as everyone else. We did not kill a "Good Buck" all year long. We never even saw one on camera worth shooting and put cameras out in Aug. A few deer would go to feeders but not many.
A couple club members shot a few "Okay" 8 points but nothing good. We did kill some 160+ does as they were fat...
Overall, worse year I have seen in a long time.

We also have antler and weight restrictions in our club, and most of the 3.5 year olds are borderline. Some make it and some don't. There were also some bigger deer on camera that were no doubters. Those are the deer that I estimate to be 4+ years old.

What’s the weights on yall bucks? I know early season they’ll be tad heavier than late season due to running around.

I hadn’t thought about what a tremendous benefit trail cams would be in that respect. I guess you would learn the deer that frequent your area and see them every year.
I’m primarily a duck hunter, so forgive all of the questions!

Bruh I shot a deer with my bow from the ground at 25 yards this year. Didn’t recover but that’s not corn piling lol

quote:a lot of people here bitch about trail camera’s and deer names which I’m a little bit on that train for “names” as well, but on my iPad and computer I have folders of bucks in Different files going back at least 14 years for data purposes. You can really see which deer are offsprings of specific bucks from years past and like the poster that responded to you before it’s the easiest way to age a deer if your on the fence If he’s 4 or 5 years when the first pic you got of him was 2-1/2.

Amite county.
Bucks killed: young 6pt (kids first deer), 7pt, 2 8pts, & 9pt. The 6 and 9 were both young. Guest shot the 9. May have been his first deer too.
Does killed: 5. At least 2 were 130lbs.
I didnt have many hunts that I went without seeing a deer. It was nice. I could have easily shot the MS limit of 8.

Honestly if I could snap my fingers and revert the laws back to the year 2000, I would. I hate the extra expenses and would rather spend that money on TSI, burning, ladder stands and seed.
My personal opinions go further if you look at trail cameras. Before cameras, hunting was more fun to me and I hunted more.
I've learned you cant go 100% cold turkey into regen and no till. Every plot needs a different remedy and all of them need some chemicals from time to time. You CAN reduce those chemicals and disturbances once established though.
I tracked that deer to where I would have needed a helicopter to get it out lol....now the shot was uphill and on an alert deer.....both things I didnt know needed to be taken into account when bow hunting from the ground. It was my first bow hunt at 42 years old
