Also, has anyone mentioned Baker stands, until someoone shares an experience hanging on a side of a tree with one of those deathtraps
Thought about Baker after I mentioned Amacker. Hell the Baker was work, it wasn't the stand and sit climbing. Pull yourself up a tree. The platform was plywood! Surprised I didn't kill myself with one.

This is what the Amacker sounded like when i would climb with it (mind you, i was 12 to 14 years old)
CLANK CLANK. CLANK TING CLANK CLANK.
CLANK CLANK. CLANK TING CLANK CLANK.

I used a Baker for the first several years I hunted. Mine was a stand up/ sit down type that faced the tree though. I've hear a lot of horror stories about Bakers, but this particular model must have been better than the other kind. It was made for rifle hunting though, and it was hand to use with a bow, which is what I did.

My BIL works for Entergy and at the time he could build just about anything out of aluminum. He built us a couple climbers that were great but I think they have all been stolen. He built a small one that you faced the tree when you climbed. It was supper light and could fit around a small tree.

My dad could.glide up a tree in an amacker with maybe only one CLANK. He was smooth it and he is inaudible with his new getup.

When I decided I wasn't nimble enough for the Baker pivot and sit move, I got a factory reject Amacker. I shite you not, I climbed a tree to the clouds in something a fella in Tallulah deemed not fit for regular sale.
Then I doctored it up with a swing that faced me away from the tree(and moved my leverage too close) I never tied the two pieces together nor had a pull rope.
One day I was in my little swing, facing away from the tree..way the frick up it. I bumped the bottom platform and that bastard 'walked' all the way down that hard oak I was in. There I was, sitting in my swing, nothing beneath me. Thank God I was like 19, I got up on the frame and turned around and slipped out of the top and bearhugged the tree all the way down to get the bottom. The bearhugged back up.
If it happened to me today, at 44, I would be found dead, playing candy crush, in the swing.

I've always been a little leery of heights. That scenario was my worst nightmare when climbing with those old stands.
I remember once, I climbed up a tree and when I got up there, there was no way to position the stand where I could shoot through the tree branches in front of me. I ended up doing a hop-step out of my stand into the tree branches in front of me so I could saw some off, then climbing back across into my stand. I wouldn't even consider that today.

It was stupid, for sure, but I couldn't climb higher because the tree forked, and lower had just as many branches in front.
