Yes.
I did my research and made a material list and plan based on YouTube videos and products like Hothead headliners. Our Sahara is the first year JL, 2018, and I did this project in 2021.
Buy one 4x8 sheet of 1/2" High Density (HD) POLYISO (ISO). ISO is a low slope roof insulation and I'm a roofer so it made sense for me to use. Get it from roofing supply houses not big box stores. Make your shapes of the Jeep top out of the ISO using a box cutter. Glue the ISO to Luan, thin plywood. Glue your carpeting material to the ISO fold it over onto the back of the Luan and staple it in place. Staple strips of ABS plastic to the Luan to use for the 3M tape to stick to. The 3M tape is double sided. IIRC I prepped my top panels with a cleaner. Stick strips of 3M tape to the ABS plastic strips and set in place. Hold down for several seconds rubbing them in. Its lasted 4 years without issue.

A undercoating wouldn’t be at least a start?

Dang, that looks excellent!
Do you think it's superior to what Jerp sells?

Not sure. I haven't seen what Jeep sells in person. I just didn't want to spend the kind of money hotheads wanted and it looked like the kind of project I could tackle. If I had to do it over, I would've gotten carpeting that matched the texture of the carpet on the floor. The stuff I used I bought at Lowe's. Its real rough textured.

I've got a 97 Wrangler that's my primary vehicle with a soft top.
