Sitting on a food plot 50 degrees with the wind ripping out of the north. Hunting with my 30-06. The wind is less than ideal for where I'm sitting but I'm just thankful to be in the stand. This spot has earned the nickname the grocery store. The majority of the deer we kill each year come from this one stand alone. I'm going to try to sneak in a few hunts after work this week. Looking for a buck following a doe.

Hunting is winding down for the people I hunt with even with a few weeks left of the season. The warm weather has burned a lot of people out. I still have the itch to get one to two more deer down. It'll depend on how this week goes for me. I only have one weekend free to hunt before end of the month.

Actually ended up taking a good long nap today after getting the heifers feed and new wire set up.

Torn between killing and cleaning or going to bed early. I brought an Abita to celebrate the season, deer or not.

With the dry winter so far the clover came up late. The deer typically will go after the clover in the pasture in the daytime. This year I don’t think I saw a deer in the pasture after November 1st.

I heard from other the deer were moving in the woods, I hope they get two.

Did you shine him with a light as he was setting up?

Oh yeah, I shined him. I flipped back and forth from red to white, and ran through the brightness settings so he could see a flashing light. He was in a bad spot, and only shot once at some woodies just after daybreak. Once the woods settled back down, I actually saw some deer. Had 6 does pass with a nice 7pt trailing them. I was just about to squeeze a shot off and realized he was a little smaller than what I’m looking for, so I let him go.
Ended up walking almost 2 miles scouting midday, just to end up only a couple hundred yards from my morning spot. I was too worn out to climb a tree, so I hopped in a lay down for the evening. With all this wind, I’m thinking that was a good decision.

I don’t hunt public anymore except out west but it’s amazing how people just don’t know. One of my last hunts on public was at buckhorn and I was set up in a climberon a strip of woods going into some crp probably a mile off the road with the wind in my face. An ol boy comes in 5min before daylight an I flash him and he flashes me back and we do that for 2-3 mins and he sets up 150yd on the ground right in my scent trail. I saw some deer he wasn’t messing me up but didn’t care that the wind was completely cutting him off!!!
