We'll just have to agree to disagree on this matter. Widlife management isn't cheap. Don't believe me? Just look at our state and the condition of the WMAs (and the number we have lost) and then look at the cost of a resident license and nonresident in this state.

Curious as to what part of Baldona's post you don't agree with though.

LOL, yeah it is actually. Where was I wrong?

I'm not going to derail, but one of the reasons tags are so expensive is because otherwise greenies will buy them all up. If you have a $30 lottery, you know how many people will enter? Like 500,000 for 10,000 tags and your chances will be horrendous.

What good does that do? None.

And yes, show me a state and I'll show you how almost anyone can get tags almost every year. It may not be a great unit, but tags are available.

Looks like a great hunt OP. Never pass an animal on the first day you'd shoot on your last! The west is great.

I should preface I have been salty about this issue for some time. And at one time, I read a few articles that some state governments view non-resident tags as a general tax base. So a percentage of funds are diverted from conservation.

I'm not disagreeing with you on that. But how much is an out of state deer hunting license for Louisiana? I'm going to Tennessee this year and its almost $250 for an out of state white tail license all said and done.

You can find cow elk tags for that much. The bull elk tags are more, simply by demand.

Yeah it is a point of revenue. And while the animals are on federal lands, the states pitch in plenty of money and I don't have an issue with them making money on hunting.

People complain about things like Wyoming requiring "guides" on National Forest, but there are also plenty of areas that out of staters don't require a guide.

30-50 dollars per. This $1000 in Montana, Wyoming, etc to hunt on land we paid for is a racket.

To put in for a draw is cheap as hell.

To buy a land owner tag, that is expensive ($1000)

If you draw a tag then you have to pay the license fee, just like you do for deer

Yeah, I recognized that.

So? It's not my business how that state chooses to direct it's nonresident-generated license fees. If they feel the money generated by resident license/tag fees is sufficient to manage the lands/herds, I'm ok with that.

Would a $50 try at a lottery be nice? Sure. But if the chance of getting drawn is already miniscule, and the $50 try increases the pool of applicants by 100-200% or MORE, then I have even less opportunity at beung drawn.

Nice OP.

The draw is in or around April I think. I need to start putting in as well. Made my first trip out there last year and it is an awesome place. Just south of where OP was.

Got a best friend whose Grandpaw owns a bunch of land and cabin/camp at the base of Brazos peak I spent many a summer out there and was able to get in on a elk trip a couple years ago.. they had extra cow tags so I shot a cow and helped pack others elk out. I would live there year round but it snows in about November and no one can go up there.. it’s absolutely beautiful. I have been there in July and seen frost on the ground. Where were you from Brazos? The cabin is at about 10thousand feet and the peak is 11 thousand and something.

ran straight to me and stopped about 20 yards broadside. Not wanting to kill a young bull on the first day and still having 4 full days left to hunt, I decided to pass on him and let him walk.
Dude.

Your first time elk hunting and you passed on a legal bull?

That's like a virgin passing on the chance to bang an OT 7 because he wants to bang a supermodel to pop his cherry.

That 5x5 should be in your freezer baw.

We weren't too far from where you're talking about, just a little more North. Right on the Colorado border.. I'd say less than a 30 minute or so drive from where you're talking about. We were also in the 10-11k range-
