The cost savings when you get to that round count will pay for more than a new barrel though.

Thanks for the replies.
What to look for in range ammo? I know nothing about a 556 round other than what it vaguely looks like.
Whatever is cheapest for the range.
I stick to M193 for serious use. But if you want HP get some Federal Fusion MSR 62gr.
As for mags, I like Gen 3 windowed Pmags.

How do I get downvoted twice for suggesting reliable range ammo?
WWB that doesn't come from Lake City has issues.

60cpr is still outrageous for range ammo when you get brass M193 for 38-40cpr right now.
Where? $0.38-$0.40 is Tula or Wolf.
I see PMC and Privi for under $0.40 on Ammo Seek but that's not genuine M193.

We have no choice locally. .60 would be low.

i'm thinking of going against my initial thoughts of buying premium brands at premium prices, but i found a used DD DDM4V7 for $1,399.
LINK
pretty much bare bones, but for the price. seems like a good deal.

Hey, let me bump in here to ask the experts:
I recently picked up an inexpensive upper; from Red X arms for $199. Listed as blemished, but test-fired and runs. It has a parkerized M4 barrel, carbine gas port, quad-rail grip. No BCG or charging handle, but I had spares, so I threw it together
Here it is:

Ok, it it came in, and there's a big X on the top of the upper receiver, in the rail. You can barely see it in the photo, above the forward assist
On the OTHER side of the receiver (not shown at the website), I see it marked "Sabre Defence".
As I understand it, this was a pretty desirable brand, and certainly worth the price. I read up that Red X Arms bought their stock out, so I guess they're dumping the rest.
Am I right, was this a good deal at $200?

That's not bad since it comes with their fixed backup sights.

I've never even heard of Red X.

i called that shop and they sold it an hour or so before i called so it's gone.
there's a few DDM4v7s on gunbroker in the sub-$1,500 range i'm watching. however, after reading some old threads and watching some youtube videos, i've come to learn that DD is basically a glorified mil-spec rifle that the only thing they have going for them is their barrels and their rails.
their triggers are mil-spec that will need to be swapped along with their pistol grip and stock. so now i don't know if i really want one.
this is so hard. why does their have to be so many options?

As was everything when DD had gen 1 guns.

Sabre Defence was excellent.
Never heard of Red X.
If anything, just disassemble and reassemble with a torque wrench.
That being said, I cant comprehend that there are any "new" Sabre Defence parts left unless someone just found a box in a closet or something. That company closed in 2013 and the assets have changed hands what seems like every year. LOL.

i guess. i've never heard of them until recently (last few years) but apparently they've been around since the early-mid 2000s.
it's weird coming into this thread hearing names that i've never heard of before. it used to be:
Colt
Smith and Wesson
Aero Precision
Spikes Tactical (haven't heard this name in years)
Anderson Manufacturing
FN
HK
BCM
now it's all of these "ed hardy"/ designer type names (and you're not "kewl" if you don't have one of these
Daniel Defense
IWI Zion
SOLGW
Radical Defense
Radian Weapons
Geissele Automatics
LWRC
Noveske
