Last night around 11pm me and a buddy are kicking a fire at my camper on my farm. Shooting the shite catching up and solving life’s problems. BOOM. I said damn. That was close. Buddy doesn’t think so. I say nah, that was in the field by the tractor shed. I decide to ride up and look. Pull out and there is a truck with lights on in the field. Suspicious. Maybe its the farmer that leases it and it wasn’t a shot? He’s been harvesting soybeans and has trailers still there. I pull into the field. Bo Duke in his 2000 ish maroon Silverado takes off. Buddy is now pulling out of our camp gate. He tries to follow for a few seconds. Mr poacher had to have been doing triple digits when he hit the highway and got away. I don’t pursue because I’ve had a few white cans and decide to check the field. My cur proceeds to find a spike at the tree line.

Sorry for the long wall of text but damn that pissed me off. I’m getting mad again talking about it. frick them.

All that to shoot a spike haha. Shitty. Most likely were gonna cut the straps and leave the rest to the buzzards.

Doubt they saw horns. They weren’t but about 3 inches long. I’m even madder after talking to a neighbor. I described the truck. Oh so and so has one like that. A guy always thought poached one of the biggest deer we’ve ever had on that property. He “killed” that one miles away. I know they roam. This one stayed in the same core area for years. I was asleep in the same camper and heard a shot. A few days later someone found he’d posted it on Facebook. That was 10 or so years ago. How many has he shot before and after.

Any trail cams that would have gotten pics of the truck?

Definitely sounds brazen, the way you describe him pulled onto the farm and such. Reminds me of a cousin of mine, total outlaw. Meth will make people do weird wild stuff.

Yep. I feel like they were pros. It was a perfect heart shot. I recovered the bullet and it seems to me to be a 223. Only positive is a got some sweet meat.

An ol boy I used to work with said he poached for years and would shoot them and grab them right then and drive off. His theory is most people hear a shot and then try to process where it was and how far then call the GW then it takes 30-60mins at best for the game warden to get there if they are patrolling the area. He said most of the time they would be driving off just as porch lights were getting flicked on.
Says they started out doing it for the money to sell but kept doing it for the thrill of the chase.

The thrill of the chase is a huge part of life, but dang that rifle fire sure does complicate things legally. Ha.

What a pos. I can’t stand a thief, or an outlaw. I don’t get the appeal either. The best part of killing a deer is the hunt itself. Doing things by the book and being able to kill one is what’s rewarding. 0 sport in shining one at night and shooting it, especially on someone else’s property. Just doing it to be a pos.
Hopefully you can set something up, maybe some cameras or something, and get the game wardens after his arse.

One of my real good buddies from high school is the head GJ for this area. He said the same. They only catch them for the most part when they come back for the deer. Not much they can do. They are going to patrol some nights. I haven’t given him my suspects name yet. I’ll see him tomorrow at a new years deal.

My GJ buddy summed it up with his text.

Oh yea it’s infuriating, dangerous as shite, just a violation of property and personal space and shite

It’s also a felony.

I can’t even imagine bragging or feeling good about myself for killing a deer with a spotlight or such manner.

I guess I get it if they’re poaching deer just for meat. Don’t get me wrong, they’re still pieces of shite, but I understand that just a little bit. But still need to get caught.

That's about how a lot of folks feel about hunting over a corn pile.

Meh sitting on a stand over a bait pile with cameras every which way ain't much different than shooting one at a night.

I’ve shot my fair share of deer at night over the years, but I’ve never done it on someone else’s property, that’ll get you in big trouble.

My sentiments exactly. I don't get any of it, and I I would be fine with maximum penalties for the jackoffs that do this kind of shite.
