I recently acquired this rifle and am trying to figure out how it works. I have a question about its functioning (even after downloading the manual) and hope someone knowledgeable can help me out.
After the last round the bolt is locked back by the magazine follower. But the pressure of the bolt against the follower keeps me from removing the magazine to reload. I have to hit the bolt release (which, oddly, is in the magazine) to remove the magazine and reload it, which kind of defeats the purpose of the bolt locking back.
A related question--a four round magazine came with the rifle and I am looking at ten round magazines on line. From the pictures they do not appear to have a bolt release, which would mean I need three hands to remove the magazine after the last round. Needless to say, I only have two.
Am I missing something or doing something wrong?

Thanks in advance for your help.

The magazine release is at the front of the trigger guard, the button on the side of the magazine is the bolt release.

The bolt release is incorporated into the magazine itself. Pushing forward on the button lowers the follower, allowing the bolt to close

My post was probably unclear, but I knew that. The question is, do you need to release the bolt to remove the magazine and, if you do, what is the point to it locking back on the last round?

Mine is locked away but I think you can remove the magazine with the bolt all the way back. I think they happens when you fire all the shells. After the last shell is fired, the bolt will stay back. You can remove the magazine, replace and then slide the lever forward to load another shell in the pipe

I have two of them. both 30-06. ONe is a carbine

The magazine is the bolt lock.

It's a quirky system but keep in mind that this is a hunting rifle not a combat rifle.

Yea, I have killed about 30 deer with mine. My dad loved those rifles and bought me one at a young age. He gave me the carbine a few years back when he could not hunt anymore. Unfortunately, neither do I anymore

If that is the answer, I can live with that. I wanted to make sure I wasn't doing something wrong.

One big issue with these is that the receiver steel is relatively soft compared to the bolt lugs.

Over time the bolt will eat the receiver and turn the gun into a wall hanger.

Here is a website write up: Reminton 74 series rifle overview

Mine is lightly used so the wear marks are barely there. One thing that people do to keep the wear down is use light loaded ammo that doesn't slam the bolt back with great violence. It's not a gun to shoot thousands of rounds through. If you want it to last just hunt with it and shoot a box a year. It's common for the wear to happen in a few hundred rounds.

Hornady makes Custom lite in 30-06 or you can load your own. These should be easy on the receiver.

I appreciate you posting that, interesting article. But the author certainly isn't a fan of these rifles.

It seems the 742 has no middle ground. People like them, or don't.
Mine works fine. I care for it well and use it within its limits.

Here is a guy that likes them:

Ive the model 742 in a .243 win caliber. Inherited it from my dad. Had it reblued a several years ago. Ive never lost a deer I shot with it. Used Sierra Gameking BTSP bullets. Ive retired it now for a Ruger 25-06. I'll hand it down to my son one day though. He might wish to use his old grandaddy's 243 for nostalgia.

I have one chambered in 30-06. I just consider it a single shot it jams so often. My son has one in .308 and he tells me the shorter actions don’t jam as much as the longer ones.

That’s all I got.

I just inherited my dad’s 30.06 in the 7400. He never had a problem with it jamming but I think he filed the magazine down like the guy was saying. I think they are also prone to rusting in the chamber which can cause failure to eject.

there’s a big nut that holds the barrel on the receiver, make sure she’s dick tight.

Not to give bad info but I wanna say that locks the bolt but it's been years since I shot mine. Gave it to dad to throw in the safe but I always laugh at the anti AR people when these are arguably the same "thing" in multiple calibers with less mag capacity.

Interesting gun nonetheless. I grew up deer hunting with a pseudo uncle of sorts and he uses/used a 760 and I been trying (albeit not that hard) to find one. The pump was fun to shoot.

Anyone ever threaded a woodmaster barrel for a can? Would be a cool novelty rifle.

My best friend bought the 742. I bought the 700 Bolt. He said he wanted to have 5 quick shots “ in case he needed them “. I wanted one good clean shot.
