The most effective way to get rid of them is to treat all the ant hills on the same day. I use Ortho Orthene Ant Killer, very effective stuff and usually kills within a day.
Those treatments give instant results, but they are back in two weeks because the queen wasn't killed. You can kill 90% of the colony but it will just repopulate and a new mount will pop up 30 feet away a few weeks later.

How long do you see it taking to work? And have you ever found that disturbing the bed (mowing for example) before it’s fully taken effect causes them to move before they’re dead? I can’t swear to it, but that seems to be happening for me.

2 to 3 weeks. And yes, if you frick up their mound, they'll move.

IMO, there is no solution.
Oh yes there is...

I used a bernzomatic torch on an ant hill today up by my woodshop. It was pretty satisfying.

Yeah, that’s what makes the mound applications of bait so useless for me. I can’t wait 2-3 weeks between mowing.
I used Amdro and Extinguish this year and it seemed like they worked but not reliably. Maybe 1 out 10 mounds were nuked.

Cyanara from tractor supply will kill the whole pile in 10 minutes. You mix it with water in a pump sprayer….. break up top with shovel to get them good and mad then spray on top. They will all be dead on top of the pile within 10 minutes. Spray is also great for mosquitos. You’re welcome

Bring in black ants. we have them by the billions, it seems. Inside and outside. never stop. will slow down, but never stop.
on the bright side.....nary a red ant to be found around the house.

ive used that orthene powder before and while it they seem to vacate the mound within 24 hrs, there are usually new ones popping up less than 10 ft away. i think that powder on the mound just pushes them further underground, dont see how it can percolate through and kill the entire colony.

Zero ants, zero mosquitos up here in Bentonville AR. Ahhhh. My two favorite things about being up here. Year 9 and we love it.

Tannerite will work every time on those Ant Nests. They won’t come back because their nest will be gone.

We talking fireants here.
There's a lot of ways to eradicate them.
My Mom was just reminding me this morning of the first time I stepped into a pile of them in the 50s as a kid ... living in Bradenton, FL. So they've been around that long in the Southeast.
Did they come in on a ship or across the border from Mexico? Who knows.

Semi-fun eco solution is simply poring a quart of boiling water into the middle of the mound. Kills them instantly and steam-cooks everything in the tunnels.

Amdro works good but sometimes you have to hit the den a couple times.
