We’ve already gone through all the stands, spraying the nest and taking the down. However on a warm day like today they like to swarm around the stands. They don’t make a nest. If anything they just clump up together

Any tips on how to keep them away from the stands?

Spray bottle with Dawn and water mixture. 1:1 to kill them. Wasps don’t sting after October has always been the rule

Put a cow ear tag with insecticide in each box stand. Easiest method to keep all bugs out of box stands.

Put them in after the season and it keeps them clear until the next season. We throw them away when the season starts, nothing really comes back when it gets cold. No lady bugs, no wasp, nothing.

Get the small room foggers and set one off in the stand. I keep a pack in the bike. Keeps them away all season.

Any Co-Op should have them and I just saw that Tractor Supply has them online. Not sure if one is better than the others.

We buy some cheap bifenthrin from tractor supply and spray down the walls and ceilings of the box stand each spring right before it starts warming up. Been doing that for years. Have not seen a live wasp in there in a long time. Will see dead ones on the floor where they come in and try to set up shop and then the poison gets them but that's it.

https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/compare-n-save-indoor-outdoor-insect-control-79-bifenthrin-concentrate-117081399--1

Mix it one ounce to one gallon of water. Can spray in and around your house too. Works great.

Update: this morning I passed by the same two stands I saw yesterday that were swarming with wasp, and there isn’t a single wasp in them or near them.

Can you explain what you did? We have a serious wasp issue

That’s the thing. I didn’t do a damn thing.

I got to the property yesterday and multiple stands were simply unhuntable due to the number of wasp swarming around them. I’m talking 20-30 per stand.

This morning on my way out l, I left extra early to go take care of them so that every stand would be good when that cold front comes through Friday, and there wasn’t a single wasp in any stand.

taking the down

I don't think wasps will build where there is an old nest so we always leave the old ones in the stand. By taking them down you are just cleaning up a nice place for them to build next year.

Anyway, at this time of year they aren't aggressive. Just use the old hat swat and stomp technique.

What time of day were they swarming?
What were the weather conditions?

I clear all nests out of my stands at the beginning of the season.
Wasps will still be attracted to my stands in the evenings if there is a clear sky. Never in the morning or on overcast days.

I think they are attracted to the metal roof heating in the sun.

I put a fogger in mine. So far they are non-existent. I will see this weekend if that is still the case.
