I’ve been stopped for suspicion of dwi twice. I told them I had a pistol in the center console. They told me if I could call someone to come get me I was free to go but had the leave the truck until the next day. Both times when I returned, the gun was unloaded in the center console and the bullets were in the driver’s side door drink holders.
Wait, what? So they thought you were too drunk to drive both times but let you go? And, you left your truck unlocked for them to rummage through while you were gone?

Man, it’s called courtesy. I have always informed them that’s there is a loaded pistol in the door. Never been searched and never had a bad experience with the popo.
and that is dumb. all that does is heighten their anxiety.
They don't give a shite that you have a pistol in your car, assuming your a normal human being that isn't a dumbass criminal that might use it against him.
Just give him your license and registration, hope he gives you a warning instead of ticket, and be on your way. There's no need to give him reason to stick around longer or think anything suspicious of you.

Yeah pretty much. But they rummaged through the truck while the other officers had me hemmed up by their car taking the sobriety test. Funny thing is, one of these times was during the .22 bullet shortage and Academy would only let you buy 2 boxes. So every time I went I would buy 2 boxes. I probably had 30 boxes scattered around in the cubby holes and glove box. Finally, the officer came back and asked if I had a .22 in there anywhere and I explained to him why I had so many boxes.

True but I would rather them know ahead of time than see it when or if I get out. Being almost deaf they usually ask me to walk to back of truck at night so I can hear them.??

Automobile is an extension of your home.

frick that, it's none of their business what I have in my vehicle. If I'm being stopped for suspicion of a crime and they get a warrant to search my vehicle, then they will know I had a firearm. I live in south Texas and I've been stopped a few times and have been asked if I had a firearm in my vehicle and I simply tell them that it's none of there business and as a law abiding person it's well within my rights to have a firearm and also well within my rights that I don't have to disclose that information.

Really wish people would stop saying “Your vehicle is an extension of your home”
The problem with this statement is that MOST people who use it do so with the mistaken belief that they can do anything in their vehicle that they can do in their home. That simply is not true.
That statement has no legal status. It is a layman’s phrase used in reference to the ability to defend oneself in their vehicle SIMILARLY as in one’s home.
This is a result of the “Carjacker Law" that was added as a justification for homicide, and the legal allowance to have a firearm inside one's vehicle without the need for a permit in certain states such as Louisiana.
Also, some insurance documents make reference to the statement that for insurance purposes, your "vehicle, garage, boat, etc. is considered an extension of your home." However, insurance law is not the same as criminal law.
You cannot do everything in your vehicle that you can do in your home due to expectation of privacy precedence and specific local laws. The Supreme Court has already ruled that you have the same expectation to SAFETY in your vehicle as you do your home, but they have also ruled that you DO NOT have the same expectation of PRIVACY in your vehicles as you do your home.
There are different legal requirements for search and seizure in your home than their are for your vehicle.
An extreme example is that you can walk around naked in your home all day, and that act in and of itself is not a crime. However, if you are driving around town naked in your car, then that act in and of itself is a violation of most obscenity laws and is arrestable.
Another example is that while you can drink until you die in your home, you cannot drink in your vehicle in most cases. in MOST cases, you would be in violation of either Driving While Intoxicated or local Open Container ordinances.
There are very few exceptions where your home can be searched without a warrant. There are more and different exceptions that allow a search of your vehicle. Different rules and laws for the home and vehicle.
So.....your vehicle is not an extension of your home because you do not have the same expectation of privacy in both. However, you do have the same expectation of safety and may defend yourself in most situations in your car the same as you would inside your home.

Be a little nicer and they might give you a warning instead of a ticket.

False equivalency their dawg. For purposes of a firearm in a vehicle in LA it is considered an extension of your home. Albiet, people may overuse the phrase as it is somewhat a colloquialism but naked and a gun in your dash aren't the same nor is that going to be looked at the same. LA law says you can do it, so you can do it. Simple as that.

Oh BS.
Keep your registration away from your gun.
They don't get told a damned thing.

I’ve heard that the Orleans cops give you lots of grief for open carrying and basically make you prove that the gun is yours. So I just CC when I go to Nola now.

I keep a loaded shotgun under a towel in the backseat of my car all the time. And a handgun on a magnet near my right knee. You never know what situation you might find yourself in. I travel throughout the state weekly and gas up in places sometimes that can be a little sketchy.

Same. Been pulled over twice and informed them both times that I had a pistol in my center console. They both said something to the effect of “I appreciate you telling me, and it won’t be a problem as long as it stays there”.
Mine stays right by my right leg on the side of my console. It is very accessible. It can also probably be seen from the window when its down so I will always tell them about it. I dont want them seeing it and getting nervous

How many boxes did it take Lt. Columbo to arrive at this hypothesis?
