Rust on gun barrel

My son has an old mossberg 88 20ga that he leaves on his 4wheeler in the building. It is basically a snake gun for creek fishing around the house.
He left it propped up against a tree by accident a few weeks ago. Well he realized it wasn’t in the 4wheeler this morning and found it by the creek.
It is pretty rusty, does anyone have any idea how to get the rust cleaned up without destroying the barrel?

You can use oil and fine steel wool to clean it up.

If he just leaves it on the 4 wheeler, I probably wouldn’t waste my time trying to clean it up. What’s the point?
If you get the rust off, you’ll need to treat it somehow. It will need to be reblued or you could just rattle can it.

Thanks I’ll try that.

I probably will just put some rust prohibiting paint over it once I use the steel wool to clean it up a bit like the duck hunter suggested.
I just want to keep it from getting any worse

If it’s just light surface rust, you will probably be fine after you smooth it out with some oil and steel wool, but it would be a good idea to keep it wiped down with oil regularly.

It's 0000-steel wool, not the brillo pad from under the kitchen sink. A web search will provide great guidance from credible sources (and not a rando U-Tube video).

Just sand it all off, clean it with brake cleaner, then rattle can it.

I don't want to be the fussy dude, but you should have chewed on his arse a little. Every gun is a worthy tool and should be respected. My grandpa taught me to take good care of all my guns no matter what standing they had in my arsenal. I taught the same thing to my son. I have guns that spent many a hunt being dragged through the Basin that look like the day they entered my possession.
Don't mean to pick, I just take care of my tools, no matter what their purpose.

If you're gonna rattle-can it, I suggest the Aluma-hyde from Brownell's

But only if you have an apron like Caleb's

It’s a tool, period. The maverick 88 is made to endure exactly this type of treatment, still work, and not hurt your feelings that it has some rust. There’s no need to revere it any more than a well used pair of channel locks.
OP, any penetrating oil will take the rust off. Make sure to let a good bit get into where the action bars slide and work it back and forth. Wipe down with alcohol and hit it with some grill paint.

lol he did hear it for a while not just me but his mama too.
He said his dog was acting like an idiot that day and he just forgot to grab it when he was calling for him to come back so they could come to the house.
Thanks everyone, I knew y’all would have a few ideas to clean it and keep it from getting any worse.
