A neighbor’s cat was batting something around in my backyard treeline a few minutes ago so I went to see what it was. He was giving this thing the business, but it was unharmed. I let it slither off into the woods. Really cool looking snake.

Beautiful creature. Still never seen one in the wild. Beginning to give up hope as I don't spend much time in the woods anymore.

Pretty snake, but I would have left it in 2 pieces.

Red touches yellow, kill the fellow.
Red touches black, pet him on the back.
How big was this one?
I’ve only seen one in the wild. It was about 8” long.

Such awesome snakes!
Got my 2nd one in Apalachicola a few weeks ago. Didn’t grab my hook when I hopped out the car so I had to just grab it.

The cat that was after it will probably try to find it again. He has a habit of hunting snakes in the woods back there and bringing them to his owner's back porch.
He got tagged by a copperhead a couple months ago and spent a few nights at the vet's office. Didn't learn his lesson though. He's also a mole killing machine and shows up on my deer cameras just as often as the coyotes do. He's a cool cat.

I've seen two. One crossingva path in the woods.
One in my flower garden.
Let both alone as they are really no threat.

I realize these things don’t really bite people but miss me with that. Only thing I would touch it with is a machete. Cottonmouths aren’t really aggressive either compared to their cousins but people have no issues slicing them up.

They are shy snakes so there aren't really that many encounters. But they will strike. People are most commonly struck on the hands or arms, either reaching into cover where the snakes are or playing with them under the false belief that they can't strike. Look up the antivenin availability issue if you are interested.

There’s a cringey video around of a little kid playing with one and getting bitten - had no idea what he was holding. Think it was a dry bite though.

One thing about coral snakes, they don't have fangs like pit vipers. They would have to bite you an a finger or something to have any chance of injecting venom.
Regardless, not going to test my luck.
