Most gun safes are fine when you only need to keep your kids friends from getting to your guns or a smash and grab thief. If a true criminal wants what you would put in a safe they will get it no matter what kind of safe it is. I personally know two different people that had someone break into their homes while they were at home. Both people provided safe codes after a severe beating to themselves and their wives. One guys wife never fully recovered from the beating. Both cases happened after a worker in the home saw the safes and broke in later. So just because you spend a lot of money on a safe doesn’t mean your stuff is safe. Very few would protect your guns from a full on house fire.

This is why it’s very important to keep things out of sight, and don’t advertise what you have to everyone. It’s rare, but a good example of an additional thing to keep in mind.

Best post ever

And I still got that lone downvote. I swear there is a dude on the OT that follows me around to other boards for some reason.

lol I gave you an upvote because I have pretty much the same outlook as you on what I have a safe for.
As for the serial downvoter I think you could have posted that you just brought a terminaly I’ll kid to shoot his first and last deer and tracked it with your terminaly I’ll dog that died right after finding it and buried it where the deer was found and that MFr would downvote it.

I bought a 64 gun Cannon safe from Tractor Supply a couple of years ago and was happy with the price and have been pleased with the safe. My primary purposes were to keep my firearms away from the grandkids and to keep my wife from keeping up with my acquisitions and accumulations. Win on both counts. Might get another.

Long term, when I build a house, the plan is to build a cinder block room and vent it and insulate it.

Then install a safe door from an old small town closed bank. They’re everywhere here in rural Alabama. Just got to get there near the time they’re closing in he bank. It will weigh hundreds if not thousands of pounds and will require a contractor and serious tools to install. Crackhead Charlie and his pals will play hell breaking into that.

So I went with the Liberty and think it's worth the $3k or whatever I paid when I bought it.

I have a Liberty Colonial 50. Liberty big box safes and ones you buy from a Liberty Dealer are not the same. The dealer safes have better steel, fire insulation and locking mechanisms. I reaerached alot before buying. I also looked at getting a cheaper safe and firearms insurance. What I found with the gun insurance is they really aren't worth it if you have hard to replace guns. I have several in my collection that are rare and would be hard to replace. The insurance would not give you fair market value for say a .284 Browning Belgian Safari.

All the safes I've owned came this some type of floor anchoring system. But again, those are mostly just for safety purposes and a deterrent from a burglar with a hand truck. If someone really wants the safe and has a bit a time, 4-6 bolts into a concrete slab won't stop them.

An acquaintance of mine encased his safe with cinder blocks and a steel plate (among some other things) after he decided its perfect placement. Overkill but its not going anywhere I guess

Does everyone have slab floors? or can they be placed on crawlspace construction?

Useless, all of those and the store-bought mass produced thin meatal models can be broke into within minutes and none stand up to their fire rating. Wouldn't waste my time on any of them protecting 50+ guns that have sentimental and family legacy. Get a custom built in somewhere with proper insulation, humidity control, ventilation and a security system with a relocker that can't be drilled. The Amont you have invested in 2-3 of those guns will pay to protect all 50.

They're not useless. It's a box to hold guns.

There is no safe that can't be broken into.

Add sheet rock and fireproof blankets to the inside and you'll increase the fire rating.

A gun safe is to store firearms and hopefully keep intruders out of it. If some meth head arms himself with a torch, your custom safe is useless.

You can use lag bolts instead of the concrete anchors if its on wood

Is there a way to find the joists like he would find a stud with a stud finder? I would rather drill into that wood versus just going through the floor and subfloor. I can’t really get under the house that well.

whatever the number of guns a safe is advertised to sell, just know it probably holds about half that number when you account for scopes, etc.

I don't know if there's a more proper way, but the one time I needed to find floor joist, I drilled exploratory holes with a long thin (1/8 I guess) drillbit in a straight line every 1.25 inches until I hit the joist. But I knew which way the floor joist went and also knew there wasn't electrical/pipes in the floor

But I think the hex bolts the safe company provides would be more than adequate in the floor & subfloor only
