And thank you OB for this thread not making me feel like such a wimp for generally avoiding them.

I’ve got a large pair of grippers I keep in the yak specifically for catfish. I’ve luckily never hooked a big one in the yak, I’d probably just cut line if I did. Not worth the hassle.

In Cocodrie last year I had a hard head dorsal go between my pinky and ring finger and sink as deep as possible. Was on my right hand so continued to fish. Obviously I was gun shy and handling a gaftop too small for grabber and it slipped through and it’s dorsal went all the way through my middle finger. Hurt like hell

Haven’t been back in salt water since.

Calle lazy, but every time I catch a hardhead I just cut the line. Those frickers are Satan's spawn.

You need to get yourself a hard head bat. A solid tap and they're stunned and you can take them off at your own pleasure. Plus it might kill them.

Look it up. Heard it all my life as I get stung a few times every year. The slime on the fish seems to help some.

Yeah this is nothing to treat lightly, especially with the incidents like I described. I've heard of several horror stories about people being pricked by shrimp, bitten by crabs, stung by something in the water and it just runs rampant when it get hold of the body.

BIL got popped by one about 4-5 years ago. Rampant infection. Ultimately had to have surgery to debride and clean it out. He ended u losing some function in his hand.

Is a hardhead sting worse than a gafftop sting? I've caught both many times and I'm fortunate that I haven't been stung.
