I've seriously been thinking about buying 30-50 acres when I retire in a few years, but damn these trespassers are nonstop. Sadly, this is occurring all over the country! Is there any type of federal or state law to help land owners?

Plenty of laws but not much can be done dealing with outlaws. We are going to add some fencing. That won’t stop the poachers. It will just make it more difficult.

It's two fold.

1- befriend your local game warden and have his personal cell number

2- develop a reputation of a guy whose land you don't want to trespass on

Cell camera with instant pics have reduced the issue quite a bit.

Are they regular people or sovereign citizens? Not much you can do about the latter, unfortunately. They can do whatever they want as far as I can tell.

Time to put the above recommendation to be a land owner you don’t trespass against in action. Have help, be armed, get them off your land with no doubt about your level of commitment.

Create a decoy still on the back of the property, and booby trap the shite out of it.

Keep the real still on someone else's property.

Lots of signs
Lots of trail cameras
Press charges the first time they’re caught.
The word gets out. Lots of land owners are scared to press charges.

My Dad owns 40 acres south of Jackson, MS he’s offered to me, we just aren’t exactly sure where it is. If it’s where we think it is, the neighbor says it’s gated and has a bunch of locks on the gate.

I know a guy who owns a couple hundred acres in south Alabama managed only for deer hunting. He got a call from a neighbor about a lot of traffic on his place. Turns out somebody printed up a bunch of flyers and advertised a big atv riding event on his place. The promoter charged $40 per rider and there were about 75 riders showed up and were driving all over his land. There were even food trucks set up. When the law got to questioning everybody no one actually knew the guy they paid the money to. He was never caught. Absolutely destroyed his roads and green fields.

Do you have the OnX app? Should be fairly easy to locate the property.

Spend a lot of time on the property.

Don’t buy land in a bad neighborhood.

Damnit, that’s infuriating.

Its hard or impossible to patrol land if you live 3 hours away. You either need to be within an hour or have a neighbor who you can compensate to do the task for you.

And if you buy land next to a community of trash, u fricked unless you or someone else lives on the damn property. But don't buy land next to a bunch of trash.

I would put these as 2 and 3. Most trespassers are locals, your neighbors. Many many times your land you just bought was someone’s family land, whether it be grandparents, uncle, etc.

I find the best plan to help prevent trespassing is to befriend your neighbors. Get to know them. There’s usually one neighbor that knows everyone and likes to talk.

Once that’s done, move to 2 and 3 and be firm.

It never helps to “be that rich guy from so and so city that only comes to shoot deer occasionally”. You want to be known, friendly, but also as said very firm. You want to be respected.

According to law enforcement people I know, they say landowners drop charges too often. If charges aren’t dropped then too often prosecutors or judges go light on the fines or other punishment. There isn’t much incentive for law enforcement to pursue trespassers nor is there much reason for trespassers to quit.

Good fences. We own 250 acres and it’s entirely fenced. Never have trespassers.
We have a hay lease a few miles away. It’s abt 200 acres but not fenced and we catch trespassers over there all the time.

Have to have them arrested and prosecuted to get word out. The only thing that works on the slow learners.

Y’all mentioned land next to trash, the biggest issues I’ve had were neighborhoods full of entitled middle class folk who bought a .18 acre lot and used the adjoining land as their park and hunting land and dumping ground.

When you say "we" does that include your Dad?
If so, I'm curious as to how that situation could develop. Did he inherit that acreage?
