Will depend on if Democrats will try to push through anti-gun legislation. Any movement and the stocks of common rounds will go scarce again but I think they are waiting to see how the court will rule on the shall-issue ccw case it has taken up first.

Vast majority of gun owners aren't high-volume shooters period. Those in the industry know this and they also know that the small percentage of high-volume shooters don't even make a blip when it comes to demand spikes. It is indeed the new owners that are buying one or a couple of boxes of ammo to take home with their new purchase, it's the millions that are also surging to get concealed carry permits that need a box of ammo or two that's mandated for the course. The casual gun buyers vastly outnumber the enthusiasts and are what's causing supply to lag behind demand. And out of those millions there will be some that transition to enthusiastic shooters, those will maintain a more permanent load on the ammo supply side. There's nothing misleading here, it's simply the numbers.

Ok, what I'm now going to suggest is this- the big panic-rush of buying guns is over. That happened in the midst of the covid lockdowns, with riots occurring in a number of metropolitan areas. Secondary and predictable surge tied to the presidential elections.

At this point, most of the new "oh shite I need a gun!" crowd, has their gun. And their cache of ammo. They might turn around and buy a second (third, etc) gun, but if it's the same caliber they have, they aren't buying the same amount of ammo (unless they are only buying a box or 2).

There continues to be a steady trickle of new ammo hitting the market, probably increasing in flow (I think we're seeing more European imports now than we did 6 months ago).
If the buying surge has passed, and the supply is steady, things will catch back up. The guys that bought a gun last August aren't keeping the shelves bare this May.

I'm simply saying the worst has passed, and things will return to fairly normal within a year's time.

But finding .300 Win Mag anywhere is a complete exercise in futility.

After 3 months I finally ran into 2 boxes of 180 grain Barnes TTSX and jumped all over them.

Bass Pro is showing to have blue box Federal 180s online now, and Midway has the 150 gr Norma. Both in the $35 price range. Midway also has the Barnes 180 TTSX, but it's almost $80/box.

I’ve been able to consistently find whatever ammo I was looking for at not absurd pricing over the last month or so. Especially 223

This.

Academy has had everything I’ve needed at better prices over the passed month.

Finding 45 ACP at 50¢ per round. Best I’ve seen in a long time.

Handguns are still hard to find, but ammo is getting better.

I'll agree with this. Things should start getting better soon

April gun sales across the nation were down 25% from March

all that could change with another shooting incident and another democrat gun bill push

NICS numbers so far this year with a percentage of increase compared to last year:

January: 4,317,804 (160%)
February: 3,442,777 (123%)
March: 4,691,738 (125%)
April: 3,514,070 (121%)

So we are still seeing people continuing to buy at record levels even compared to other "panic" periods. We've never had 4+ million check months and two so far this year. YTD we are at 131% of 2020, if this somehow continues it could be a 50,000,000+ year. That is double 2018 which was a fairly heavy volume year in its own right. If the worst has passed then it is only waiting for anything small to fan it back.

Lately I’ve found .22lr

I've been finding the Mexican Aguila in 22LR that is reasonable and bought some.

I haven't shot it yet but it looks OK. According to what I read, the Aguila factory was originally set up by Remington in Mexico in the 1960s.

Tell you one thing, the lack of 357/38spl has stopped me from buying a revolver I totally don’t need.

Palmetto had boxes of 800 rounds of .22lr for about $120 a few weeks ago. Federal 40 grain.

Saw some federal 124g 9mm today at a box store for 25cpr. 9mm HPs for 36cpr. Thats as cheap as I've seen in 15 months.

I'll post it one of these threads, the biggest takeaway to me is that it shows how chaotic buying has gotten since 2008. For years it was consistent, with definite seasonal changes in buying volume. Now there's really no telling.

Because people started to realize what was REALLY going on in the 2008 timeframe. To avoid getting the boot, I will not mention specifics, but y'all can figure it out.

Ive had decent luck buying directly from manufacturers websites. The prices are similar to Walmart and Academy with free shipping over a certain amount.

My morning routine is checking out the websites at 6AM, because they get sold out fairly quick.
