I retired a couple of years back and I’ve been burning up the Western states bonus points I’ve accumulated over the years. I used 14 points to draw a hunt area that I deer hunted five years ago. It’s fairly mild terrain and good access. No grizzlys. Also, my tag allowed me to hunt both archery and rifle, but only one bull total.
With more time than money, this would be a DIY hunt.
I went up for the archery hunt. Saw some great bulls. Unfortunately, it was hot and dry. I only heard bugling during daylight one day. After about ten days, I decided to call it. Unfortunately , after I drew the tag, two walk in hunt areas had been removed from the program. As a local said, “this turned a blue ribbon area for DIY, into just another area”. He also told me about a ranch in the low country who sold trespass rights. They had water and elk.
I was unable to return for opening day of rifle due to my son’s wedding. The season had been open for nine days when I returned. I met the rancher and paid him $200 for access. I got camp set up and went hunting. Mid morning of day two, I came across a herd of sixty that had been bumped. I totaled nine miles getting ahead of them in wide open country. I worked up a ravine to get ready for a shot, but the elk were bumped by a Polaris. I don’t know if he was a hunter or not. I went back to camp for lunch on day four, thinking about where to try. The large herd had disappeared. A man in a pickup stopped and said he’d bumped a herd of 20 that morning, but there was nothing special in the herd. With nothing else to go on, I headed to a glassing point in that direction. I immediately saw the herd from the point, about a mile away. No trees for miles. I mapped out a stalk in some ravines. I was able to pop up at 375 yards from the bedded herd. The best bull was on the left side of the herd, quartering away. I was prone and solid, so I sent a 180 Accubond from my 300 WBY, hitting him in a hind quarter and breaking a back leg. He lagged behind the herd and I got another round in him going away. He disappeared into a draw, so I eased up to find him bedded and shot behind the shoulder. This caused him to roll into a tight ravine. He’s a small six by six, but I’ve already killed a giant a while back, so that was fine. As it turned out, he was on BLM, so he was solo, DIY, public land. Wyoming has been good to me. Four tags over the years have produced two bull elk, a muley buck, and an antelope. It’s always satisfying to take your show on the road and find success.

This was camp for the rifle hunt. Elevation was around 5,500’, which made it easier on an old man.

This was the herd of 60. As someone said, it’s like hunting 600 pound antelope. The lower country has water and good grass, so some live there year round. But they aren’t the easiest to slip up on with all of those eyes.

Sounds like quite the journey. Glad you found success! I’m sure you will remember that 9 mile stalk forever, and all the work it took to get you second Bull. Congrats!

Thanks. I got the Honda right to the edge of the ravine. It was tough processing him in that hole, but easy to get him back to camp.

Awesome. Any DIY out of state elk is always well earned. I've got a good bit of Wyoming Pref points with really no units I'm shooting for. I may consider something like this, I don't really care the quality of the bull.

It’s a Kodiak Canvas. I think it sleeps 8, but three cots is really about maxed out. It has a flex bow center bar. Warms up nice with a buddy heater.
