I’m only so familiar with Peterson—I know he’s controversial and receives side-eyed coverage from sources like The Atlantic—but this is thoughtful. Thanks for clipping/posting.

It's a little more complicated. The problem is the modern female culture of dating and marriage. It's like an interview I saw with single women:

Q: 'So, what are your requirements in a man?'
A: 'He must be at least 6-1, nice build, handsome face.
He should be making at least 100K a year. Must be considerate and sensitive of my needs.

Q: 'What do you offer in return?'
A: 'Uh, well. I'm a good conversationalist.'

MGTOW is a reimagined "you can't fire me, I quit!"

quote:

In their early to mid 30s just living life as if they are teenagers. Hitting the bars every night, hooking up with chicks on tinder, partying and day drinking all weekend. Watching sports and playing video games. Traveling whenever they want, and just living the life they want to live with no real goals or purpose, other than doing what they want and having fun

To me, this is different. This is a refusal go grow up and there will be a HUGE financial crisis when these people hit retirement age and have zero net worth

Exactly... each time I see some dude claim he is MGTOW on the internet, I challenge him to post a shirtless selfie

He never does... its because they are undesirable incels, and therefore them going MGTOW is their way of implementing a pre-emptive rejection buffer

Involuntary Celibate

Basically, someone trying to get laid but can't. Different from MGTOW in my eyes, who are guys just tied of BS.

Disagree, the USD is not going to be around in it's current configuration in 30 years. The whole house of cards will likely have fallen by then.

What’s wrong with traveling when you want, doing what you want, and living the life you want to live? That’s not mutually exclusive with “having no real goals or purpose”

If the dudes work hard enough to earn the money needed to travel when they want and do what they want, I would hardly call that lazy. More of a work hard play hard mentality. Just because their philosophy on life doesn’t fit the typical Southern “white picket fence” philosophy, doesn’t mean they’re lazy / smart / not smart / etc.

Me personally: I’m 34 and not married. I have never, ever, ever wanted to be married with kids. Doesn’t mean I’m not down for a life partner, I have a girlfriend now, would even be open to marriage if she insisted, but I couldn’t care less about the institution of marriage. I think it’s an unnecessary formality for anyone who actually wants to spend the rest of their life with the person. However, I am absolutely opposed to having kids. Won’t do it.

I don’t think there’s a damn thing wrong with it. Work, earn, contribute to society, outside of that do your thing.

Or maybe it's because they don't want to share shirtless selfies with another man over the internet because that would be gay.

I can't come up with a single rational reason why a 25 year old today would do ANYTHING other than frick every girl he can lay his hands on while blowing them all off in terms of seriousness.

The women have set that paradigm and the men are absolute prey if they act any other way.

I'm left in the weird position of having a school aged son and daughter where the type of man I want my daughter to meet is the type of man I hope my son avoids being.

It's honestly a bit fricked up

MGTOW is like Separationist right? Am I remembering this correctly? They do not want interaction with females and just try to do everything from Male point of view and then are also very strict in not having contact with females for anything social.

It depends on what their priorities are and how many times they've stuck it in crazy.

Relationships aren't for everyone and some people prefer being alone.

I thought they avoided social aspects with women but were basically cool with treating them like slot machines for a dick?

Marriage is extremely important for raising children.

Wrong. Commitment is extremely important for raising children. A home with a mother and a father is extremely important. Marriage is a formality.

Again, it's about a lot of issues that exist today that put marriage into a less attractive deal for men. A few of them:

Women no longer wait till the excuse of childbirth to get fat. They're overweight in HS.

Women can't cook, clean or sew anymore.

Divorce favors the woman...alimony and child support.

Bottom line...it's not as good a deal for men as it was in the past. And women wonder why 'there just aren't any good guys out there to marry.'

Yup.

Women are already a depreciating asset while men are an appreciating asset. That's just reality.

Like someone else said though, it is incorrect to say marriage is important. Marriage USED to be important because it meant that at least most of the time, children would grow up with both parents.

NOW, marriage, if anything, is a ruse that causes many men to falsely believe they can safely have children with a woman.

Women commonly seem to think men don't really care about kids but excuse me, if I'm gonna have kids, I'd kinda like to be able to DIRECTLY father them for the full 18 years. I'm not having kids so I can send a check once a month and get 4-5 days a month with them.

Well, it's more than kids. Marriage is a comfortable lifestyle for people like me who never liked the dating life even when young. Some people need excitement and some people need predictability in day to day living.

It's also much better in old age. Single people die younger than married folks.

I need the structure that she brings. Once I got out of working in Athletics until I met her I was awful person to be around. Football gave me the structure and motivation to do right. She has given me the same type process and the kid has added an extra layer to that. I generally know where I am and where I need to be. I think teaching has helped that as well.
