Carter vs. Broome run-off would suck.
I would vote Carter without hesitation.

I've being going between Watson and Carter the last couple of weeks, but I've started to lean heavily toward Watson. I've had a couple of people speak very highly of Watson to me in how he personally helped solve different issues they had.
On the flip side, Carter proposed a bill last year that would give local governments the ability to lower the homestead exemption which I feel is a terrible idea.
So if I was voting today I would vote Watson then Carter. And I'll vote anyone over Broome in a runoff except for Marcelle.
I generally early vote, but I probably will be voting on election day this year only to gather as much info as I can on the candidates.

quote:I've known Steve Carter going back to his days as head tennis coach at LSU. He was my state senator and he usually voted the same way I would have voted if I were in the legislature...not always, but usually. I've never agreed with any politician 100% of the time.
I swung over to Carter from Watson.
I kept waiting for Watson to show some fire and leadership, and I’m still waiting. Meanwhile Carter has shown me something.
But even when I asked Steve to vote for or against a bill and he told me he was going to vote the "other way" he was always very reasonable and logical in articulating his reasons he was not going to vote the way I wanted him to vote.
And sometimes the reason was pure political numbers.
He'd explain to me that the bill I wanted to fail was going to pass no matter how he voted. So he was going to vote for the bill in order to secure some votes from other legislators on other bills that he wanted to get passed.
I don't like the vote trading part of politics but it's a fact of political life if a legislator wants to get something done.
The issues that I agree with Steve on are:
1) He wants to combine the BRPD with the sheriff's department. Basically, he wants to do away with BRPD and transfer those funds to the sheriff's department. He knows there is too much duplication of management (and salaries) and he believes we can do better with an elected sheriff policing the entire parish while doing away with the police union that controls the BRPD.
2) He wants to scrap the current building permit process in EBR Parish and start over. That's been needed for a long time.
3) And a long time favorite of mine: Carter wants to redirect some of the dedicated taxes going to BREC, the library and Council on Aging and put those funds into the city's general fund account to be spent on higher priority items, such as raises for law enforcement and cleaning up our littered streets or blighted houses.
He will have an uphill battle accomplishing those things because the local governmental establishment is so dug in protecting their turf but at least he's willing to try. I applaud him for that.

quote:It wasn't a bill. It was a proposed constitutional amendment that would have to have been voted on and approved by voters statewide.
Carter proposed a bill last year that would give local governments the ability to lower the homestead exemption which I feel is a terrible idea.
And the proposed amendment included a provision that any reduction in the homestead exemption on a local level would have to be voted on and approved by voters in that local jurisdiction.
The purpose of the amendment was go give local voters some flexibility in how to tax themselves rather than having state imposed taxation requirements and limits.
But nothing would have changed on the local level without voters approving the changes.

Carter vs Broome is just Wicker vs Broome in white face. Wicker will be making the decisions. Carter is bringing the money. The mask mandates stay and the city keeps dying, only under slightly more competent leadership.
Is this why we haven't heard a peep from Wicker since she was ruled ineligible to run?

How about your guy wanting to be in charge of an almost billion dollar city and parish budget and he can't even responsibly manage his own finances. And it's not like he got in over his head on credit cards because of health problems.
He borrowed $15,000 from his credit union for his "consulting" business and couldn't pay it back as agreed upon.
Campus Federal had to sue him in October, 2019 (last year) and as of two weeks ago it's STILL not repaid.

Which sounds great in a theoretical world. I like the idea of giving local government more control, but the reality is EBRP would greatly mismanage those increased funds and give them no incentive to cut the massive waste that already exists. Quite frankly, I don't trust our leadership and I don't trust our voters to not be tricked into reducing homestead exemption for some pie in the sky idea that is pitched in the future.
So while the bill may have great intentions, I hate the potential fallout as an EBRP resident even knowing the current homestead exemption/property tax setup certainly has its flaws.

E Eric gonna get in and sick the red guard on everybody!!
Ballot cast for Matt Watson here. Even though the EBR GOP has endorsed Jordan piazza apparently. I hate that there’s so many republicans in this field, but anyone but Broome. Or C Denise lord she would be terrible.

I inferred it from conversations with Carter personally. I have met, at length, with all the gop candidates personally in the past week.

He’s planning on giving her Gissel’s job. She’ll be the city manager. She’ll be running the beaucracy. I’m not bullshitting you. You’ll be hard pressed to find a td poster with more current firsthand knowledge of ebr politics right now than me.

Even if that's true, which is doubtful, it's a long way from your original statement:
quote:The city manager is a Chief Operations Officer, NOT a policy decision maker.
Carter vs Broome is just Wicker vs Broome in white face. Wicker will be making the decisions.
You just lost all credibility.

On all three issues you sited, we are on the same page.
The thugs don’t know if they are in or outside the city limits. And there’s no need to duplicate services. One dept. for drug enforcement, traffic, homicide, fraud, etc. is fine.
Too many people have told me our permit department is terrible and it’s killing developers and contractors. Broome and Holden let it decline to where we are today, it’s horrible.
And yes, BREC, the Library, the COA, CATS and others have way too much money and have to be creative to spend it all. Some can’t and as a result have major surpluses. Carter is right, we need to skim some if this money, beef up public safety and do the basic things in this parish that parish govt. is supposed to do.

Steve Carter is a old dumbass who needs to be put out to pasture. He’d be a worse runoff candidate than Bodi White.

Do you honestly believe she would have ZERO input on policy from that position? You’re out of your f$&king mind. Wicker isn’t a bad person by any stretch, so I don’t understand why you’re so panicked at the idea of the most moderate republican in the race teaming up with the moderate democrat who was disqualified from the race. Their views were extremely similar before she was disqualified, so even if she’s running things, it wouldn’t be a big difference from Carter running things. He’s an old school “go along to get along” republican.
