Welcome to the citizen ranks!
I, too, am a naturalized citizen, although I became one many, many moons ago (early 80s) as a child after waiting the prescribed amount of time (5 years after arriving in the US with my parents). Legal, went through the process of refugee visa (parents waited 10 years to get it), green card, citizenship.
Wouldn't change a thing!

Awesome! Congratulations, and thanks for doing things the right way!

I'm not him but, as another naturalized citizen, no hyphens for me. That didn't start until relatively recently and it's pure bs.
If absolutely necessary, say American of (for example)......Martian origin.

Just wondering, I find it interesting all the hyphens when we are supposed to just be Americans. How does it promote unity if you still identify by the country you come from?
That's like saying the original founders were English-Americans

From what I've directly observed, a lot of it mostly stems from the fact that Indians know how badly they can exploit the Indian H1Bs. The H1Bs pretty much have to work whatever hours the Indian (non H1B) client wants, under whatever conditions. Which is why I sat in an empty office (except for the H1Bs, I was the only American) on Good Friday, the Monday after Easter, the two weeks around Christmas and New Years, while the Indian boss was "working" remote.
IBM has also been actively working to replace Americans with Indians in Asia and H1Bs, and it isn't just because of cost. That didn't happen until Krishna became CEO.
I have worked for both Atos and TCS and this is 100% the business model. H1B's aren't only cheaper, you can slave drive the shite out of them.

Badass.
It's rare we all here get to take a moment to feel pride in our country, since we have been brow beaten for so long to suggest we love the idea of America and its Constitution.
Welcome HOME, my fellow American!

I think people are confused because SSNs and TINs look exactly the same. The government will let anyone pay taxes.

Tell me what about the system is "broken"?
The system is not designed to benefit USA. Just some ways I think it can be improved:
Why is it broken:
1) H1B is being used to off-shore. Initial idea was to supplement US workforce, not replace it.
2) Personal to me - long green card wait for Indians born (and not Indian citizen) people.
What I think can be improved:
1) Scrap diversity visa lottery.
2) When H1B was designed, there was a minimum salary requirement. That amount has not been updated. That salary should a) be updated, and then b) tied to inflation. (or something else like CPI).
3) Many developed countries do a point-based system for immigration, with the system being dynamic enough to be adjusted quickly to address demands. Something for USA to think about. Encourage immigration where there is potential for new immigrants to thrive and grow economy.
4) New legal immigrants are mostly flocking to the big cities that have growing population. Maybe, start to encourage new immigration to areas of the country with decreasing population.
5) Everyone talks about giving/not-giving pathway to citizenship for DACA folks. Assuming we accept the reality that DACA folks will never be deported, why not create a new option, similar to green card, but with no path to eventual citizenship. I bet a huge majority of DACA people will gladly take it. There can be other things added to sweeten the deal for people who are currently against DACA legalization. For example, how about DACA people pay more in Social Security taxes to help the program financially.
These are just a few

Serious question did the process take that long, too expensive or just no advantage to becoming a citizen on why it too almost 22 years?
For Indian born people the employment based green card wait is really long. Depending on what type (there are 3 - EB1/EB2/EB3) of employment based green card your employer is applying for, the wait can be 5/50/50 years right now.
Yes, that is 50 years.
USA gives the same number of employment based green card to every country. About 2800 per year per country for each of the three categories (EB1/EB2/EB3). That includes the worker as well as their family. So usually about 1300 x 3 primary beneficiaries from any country get green card every year. So wait for Indians have grown exponentially.
USA goes by country of birth and not citizenship for this. So people who are citizens of other country but were born in India gets screwed the most in this scenario, for example think a British guy seeking employment based green card, who was born in India because his parents were posted there for work at his time of birth - he will have to wait in the India line. I am sure this makes perfect sense :-).
My employer filed for my green card in 2010 during year 2 of my employment. I would have gotten it in 2021, and that too that was because of COVID. During that time, very few of the family based green card was used. So USCIS used those unused green card to clear some of the backlog for employment based green card.
I got married to a US citizen and decided to file for a marriage based green card separately. So at one point in time in 2020-2022, I had two parallel green card application (perfectly legal).
I had a unique situation. I filed for a marriage based green card, but I did not need my wife to sponsor me. The reason was I have already worked and paid social security taxes at that point for 40 consecutive quarters, and hence was exempt from sponsorship. I don't know of very many scenarios other than mine where that can happen.
I think the process is not too expensive. My employer paid for the work-based application, which I eventually abandoned. I paid for the marriage based one. It was not too bad.

Congratulations. From my experience those who become citizens through the legal process are very happy to have finally received their citizenship, and are some of the most patriotic Americans, sometimes more so then those from families that have been here forever.
Well... naturalized US citizens are US citizens by choice, and not by happenstance.

But a lot of my frustration comes from the below and the lack of want to fix it. Even seeing it just getting worse under Trump.
I honestly think neither Democrats nor Republicans (including Trump) want to solve immigration system's problems. They want to run on it and get elected.
For all the Trumps deportations, it is still actually mostly performative. I am not saying performative is not needed. Given what happened under Biden, performative deportations are perhaps needed to send the message that people can't just walk over the border, and the sharp decrease in border crossings suggest that it is working. But actual systematic improvements, I don't see any efforts yet.

I'm especially interested as to why, for blue-collar work, seemingly the only solution afforded is illegal immigration.
I am not as knowledgeable about the details of the blue-collar legal immigration. It is mostly the seasonal (H2A and H2B) visa. I think Congress has to approve the numbers every year, and it is ridiculously low numbers. Employers and chamber of commerce lobby like that, as that suppresses wages and benefits they have to provide.
Basically, no reform has happened to any of these immigration systems in the last 30 years.

I suppose since you did it the correct way, the government didn't give you all the same freebies that illegal border crossers got?
I got nothing. And yes, what Biden administration was doing is a slap in the face for legal immigrants.
And is was not just the Central and South Americans who were taking advantage of this.
Huge number of Indian migrants moved to USA. If you are interested, search for "US Donkey route India". That is what Indians call this. They all claimed asylum based on fake persecution. I still go to India. My parents still live there. I know for a fact that the type of persecution they are claiming simply does not exist. These poor people are selling all their possessions and lands and borrowing money from loan-sharks to pay agents to smuggle them to USA. They are usually paying anywhere in the range $60K-$100K. The ones that got deported back to India in the first few weeks on Trump administration are going to be in deep trouble as they will not have any way to pay back the loan to the loan-sharks.
I have a weird story about this. This was September of 2023. I am on my way to Vegas for the LSU USC game transiting through ATL. This Indian guy, probably early 30s, approaches me seeking help to figure out how to get to his gate. I guess he say that I as Indian and knew I would understand Hindi. He does not understand any English. He had the same concourse as my ATL-LAS flight so I ask him to walk with me. Starts talking and he tells me he recently moved to USA illegally. Paid an agent in India to get a Canada tourist visa. Goes to Canada. Then just walked to the border and requested asylum as coached by the agent and was just allowed to walk in with a future court date. Knew someone in Meridian Mississippi and went there seeking for work. Didn't really find anything. So someone else was paying for his ticket to fly to Fresno. Had no money and even asked me, a complete stranger who also happens to be an Indian if I had any job leads for him or not. I was upset at the system that illegal migration like this was being allowed, at the same time felt bad for the dude. Quickly showed him his gate and walked off as I did not want anything to do with an illegal migrant, of all places inside ATL terminal.
