US cattle herd culling is responsible for the current skyrocketing US beef prices.
Herd culling has a long lag effect as well. I don't remember the exact timeline, but it takes a cow around 18 months to hit reproductive age, then gestation is another 9 months. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable can correct those timelines if I'm off.

but I need a recipe for the shrimp that doesn't require a bunch of ingredients
Simple version. Peel jumbo shrimp (do not get it already peeled). Just dump them in a large bowl full of bread crumbs. Stir with hands and let sit about 10 minutes while you heat oil in pot or skillet. I only put one layer of shrimp at a time so I can turn each over for even browning.
I don't use any seasoning before frying. That's in dipping sauce when serving. Also.. don't junk the shells after peeling. Put them in pot of water to simmer for 10-15 minutes on low heat and then drain and put in freezer. This makes shrimp stock that is MUCH superior to any canned seafood stock. I use this for seafood soup or stew dishes...like courtbullion.

We're at 70 year lows in cattle heard size, despite adding 100 MILLION people to our population. There's no beef for them to process.

Ok, then why are eggs still 2.5 times more than they were 6 years ago?

Per capita we're at lows not seen since the 1800's

I am generally not a fan of this at all. This may be some short term fix to pacify people in the grocery stores but the answer is not more government intervention. If the government would go long enough without screwing around with the markets they would self correct.

quote:Tyson isn’t selling steaks at the grocery store. They make money based on the gap between what they pay for cattle and what they can sell the processed beef for, plus how efficiently a plant runs. If a plant has high costs, it can still lose money even when beef is expensive for consumers.
This past November Tyson Foods announced the closure of a beef processing plant in Nebraska cutting 4500 jobs and scaling back at a plant in Amarillo cutting a couple of thousand jobs. Seems odd that Tyson needed to make those drastic cuts.

It also doesn’t help that we punish the generational family farms that have been in the family for generations. At some point cattle farmers simply can’t compete. They sell off the herd, and then the land to developers who build housing and commercial properties on the land.. these lands are a finite resource. Every time we convert these lands into developments, we reduce the available acreage available to feed a nation.

If only every FTC chair was like Lina Khan... consumers may actually have a shot at getting quality competition between entities instead of dealing monopoly price manipulation

I sure have a hard time believing people aren't making money in the cattle business right now. I know I'm only familiar with small scale, but still
