The left's tactic on this has never changed:
First Step—Deny any grooming is happening and throw out the, "The religious right used to say this about gay teachers."
Second Step—Maybe admit that there are "some isolated cases" of grooming, maybe not...depends on whether they get away with pivoting or not.
If the former, admit, but qualify with, "But these cases are EXTREMELY rare and not the norm."
Step Three—Repeat the debunked notion that "gender affirming care" saves lives, and use the abortion playbook, which is, "It should be a decision between the doctor and the child/parents."
If someone points out that doctors are actively and deliberately manipulating parents, circle back to Step One and repeat the Denial Sequence applied to doctors/parents this time.
It's been the same formula for years now.

Maher actually wasn't fully on point himself. He could have been much more articulate. But the fact is: the science NEVER supported the trans suicide thesis. The science is very clear on the impact of chemical and surgical interventions in minors as pertaining to future reproductive capacity and adult sexual health.
The truth has been so buried that well-meaning people simply believe the opposite of the truth.

Bill Maher is in a real predicament. He realizes that the Democrats have lost their damn minds and he doesn't agree with almost anything they say or do anymore, but he has taken such a hard stance on Trump and Republicans over the years that he can't change sides. His whole career and show would be over if he did.
