This reminds me of my high school chemistry teacher. He lasted two weeks. We ended up having a long-term sub and the class was divided into two segments, physically. One side was the AP students being taught chemistry and the other side was a bunch of animals.

I am retiring in December after 30 years in a public school classroom. What we do today hardly resembles what education was like when I began my career.

For about the tenth time on this site I will tell you that it’s not sustainable in its current form.

I am very curious about your thoughts on this.

If when you retire you decided to write an autopsy of public schooling I would find that fascinating.

Assuming you haven't already.

I’ve always given them the grades they earn and deserve. If admin decides to move them on at the end of the year anyway, that’s on them.

As a retired, former risk mgr for a hundred schools school system, I used to visit every school in a calendar school yr to give the standard "Risk Manger" speech to all the assembled teachers & staff members. THE one question I got at every school was " what are our rights as teachers to defend ourselves when classroom/hallway/school grounds violence breaks out ?" School Board policy was " when a fist is right in your face ", you may defend yourself". This was not paraphrasing, it was the official written policy. "Your first duty as a classroom teacher is to defend the classroom of students". As one teacher subsequently asked "even when desks are being thrown around the room?" Policy answer : "yes".

This is happening in more and more schools.

What used to be confined to lower demographic schools has spread to more schools.

We pulled our youngest out of public schools in 2nd grade. We were pretty aware of what was happening, but didn’t fully comprehend the scope of the problem. At the end of the first week of private school, I asked her how her first week went. She said “Good. No one threw a desk or a chair or their books. When the teacher told us to line up, we lined up.” She didn’t even realize what she had experienced wasn’t normal.

Ban the decalogue and Bible and put up trans flags. That should do it.

The damage done to your profession over the last 10 years and especially the last 6 may never be undone. It's sad too because it's very likely all of us have a story about that one teacher that went above and beyond to actually educate and drive us to step outside of ourselves.

I'll never forgive what the unions and administrators did to the kids during COVID and what has been foisted on the kids after they returned. The lack of real discipline is fricking atrocious.

You consider kneeling to be violence?

I don't see how his actions are remotely related to classroom violence. Can you connect the dots for me?

A friend of mine retired as an elementary school principal in the St. Louis Metro.

They had a yearly report that they had to turn in on violence in the classroom. They filled it out. The admin came back to her and said, “You can’t turn this in like this. It shows 30 violent attacks on staff.” She said, “Yes. That’s an accurate reflection of what happened.” They said, “Well, we can only report instances where staff was injured.” She filled out the report to show 8 or so instances where staff was injured. They came back and said to only report instances where staff was seriously injured. It dropped to two. They then told her to only report where staff was hospitalized or disabled as a result of the attack.

I have a friend who had wanted to get into teaching HS science for years. He hired on with Gwinnett County a couple of years ago, they stuck him at one of the worst high schools in the county (Shiloh) as they do for newbies and he lasted maybe 1.5 months. Said you couldn't educate in that environment, administrators didn't act on anything, and parents were non-existent.

Anti social behaviors hate authority. It just highlights the stupidity of the general public.

When I was student teaching, I had a 6th grader tell me in front of the entire class (and the regular teacher) that she wanted to perform oral on me. That was in 2002. EBR parish has never really changed.

This is true. We need two pipelines, one for parents who value education and one for those that do not.

The ones who value education do not deserve to be in classrooms with low achievers and ne'er do wells.

Mainstreaming fricked up the classroom, progressives just cant help themselves.

Absurd.

Everyone should be critical of all authority always.
