Hows that controversial? Native American culture isn't in anyway a big part of our mainstream culture.

As someone who is 1/16th Native American I am 6.25% offended. It’s true though.... even Native American descendants would agree.

The Indians gave us tobacco and the puritans are even taking that away. Those damned racists.

Rick is factually correct. I have always said if there was ever a group with standing to be pissed off it is the American Indian.

Other than the many place names throughout the land, and a couple of dozen commonly used words (tobacco, squash, tepee, wigwam, powwow, etc.) there really is surprisingly little Native American influence in modern American culture.

So place names and vocabulary are a substantial part of modern American culture? What a lame contrarian position to take

Also, why would it be surprising in any way? No shite there isn’t much Native American influence in our modern culture. The country was founded, settled, and populated largely with Europeans for 200 years, with some Asian and Hispanic/Latino coming on strong the last 75-100 or so years.

Please enlighten us on why Santorum’s comments are offensive or even incorrect. Because I don’t see it at all.

Rick Santorum doesn’t know very much about Native Americans. The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians have about as much in common with Crow Indians as I do with the Chinese. There’s no standard Native American Culture that is universal across the nation.

Andrew Jackson would disagree about the cultural influences from what is now the EBCI.

I believe the wheel was actually invented/discovered by South American Indians (not sure if that is not supposed to count in this discussion.)

Let me amend my statement.

Indians didn't use the wheel for meaningful advancement (such as transport).

So no wagons, no carts, etc.

Because it handwaves away the murder and displacement of Native peoples.

You know, kind of like when people on here lament their heritage being erased... but more direct genocide.

His comment did no such thing. He stated that NA culture is not a large part of modern American culture. It’s a factually true statement.

The extra baggage is nothing but social media pandering/faux outrage.

Excluding mascots and trademarks, give me something the Indians created or invented that applied to our culture as we know it today.

I'll wait.
