I had to do a diversity training last week because the company thinks its important. I just fast forwarded through all of the videos and and answered the questions. It was the dumbest training i have ever seen HR do.

Even in an at-will employment state you can't terminate employment based on race or gender. Someone may want to screen shot this article before it falls into a memory hole.

Anytime a business makes hiring or firing decisions on anything other than getting or keeping the best and brightest, it's a bad sign.

couple of things to point out
laying off senior and middle management was already happening, they just gave it a diversity spin
they wont target white males specifically, they will target age + experience + salary level/rank which will be mostly white males
while laying off they are still hiring, so they will just hire more blacks out of college than they have been
everybody in O&G is doing this, so the high value black candidates are at a premium. To meet quotas the companies will dig deeper into the colleges and hire under qualified people.For the Multi-national companies they will hire more black engineers from foreign universities.
Hiring more blacks doesn't mean hiring more American blacks
these black new hires are walking into a big company with a leadership vacuum (all of the experience they just laid off), under qualified, with shaky training programs and poor morale. Some will survive, most will wash out.
The success/fail metrics are the retention numbers of the employee census after 2yr/5yr/10yr marks
ironically they could hire fewer but better black candidates and probably have a higher retention success

Only way I'd trade at a Chevron station or pump is to keep from running out. Give the racist fricks a taste of real discrimination. I kinda don't like folks who don't like me and mine.

I think they are more likely to hire Indian and Azns or other ethnicities...the article doesn't mention blacks as much as non-white minorities. And if you're in O&G you know there are nearly 0 blacks on the technical side of the biz...they're mostly in the accounting groups.

And India ( not nativeAmerican ) is not considered a minority...(have friends that found that out when their kids applied to college)

Chevron needs to hire that little gal that was the star of the Memphis Putt-Putt riot. She is spunky and will not take no for an answer. I would put her in charge of delinquent accounts.

My experience has been different...almost all white with azns, indians and hispanics mixed in.
I looked up you Indian comment and best I can tell is they get grouped into the azn minority, and suffer the same types of discrimination at elite institutions.
