There’s nothing going on right now, but all of the problems are there boiling away. Immigration, and the presence of a large foreign minority that will never become French, and who commit serious crimes at high rates*. Then there’s the economy, it’s not good. Their culture is under attack, see the Olympics. Paris also runs the country for its benefit, and usually screws over ordinary people (but that’s true across the West).
You saw it with the elections, and their efforts to stop Front Nationale, but Paris does everything in its power to suppress any kind nationalism. I think it goes back to WW2, and Germany. The Jewish community is terrified of nationalist sentiment, and with their deep pockets, they’ve had a huge influence on the intellectual debate in Europe (and America). Nationalism is forbidden, and to a great degree healthy self interest, France for the French, England for the English, is forbidden as well. Look at how people reacted to Trump.
I don’t know if you’ve seen it, but there are these billboards in the UK that say “Britain came to us” emblazoned with the flags of all immigrant people that are being transported to the UK. People are spending a lot of money to break the will of the people.
With France, I was told to expect two years of dysfunction, the ruling coalition is too unwieldy. Then we’ll have another election, and hopefully the far right will win. But even if they do, I assume the bureaucracy will stymie them.
* There was a shooting in a little town in the countryside near where my family lives a month ago now. This is a place where nothing ever happens. I was shocked. The shooter was Syrian if I remember correctly.
