It shouldn’t be looked as a deterrent in the current form. If it was swift when there is zero doubt, it saves taxpayers from housing, feeding, clothing, and securing a cold blooded murderer for 50 to 60 years. Plus it gives family closure, instead it’s likely about every ten years some 60 minutes type is going to give this guy a platform, ala Charles Manson.
To deter it would have to be public and brutal, like burning at the stake brutal on live television. I don’t think many people would be okay with that, even if they think they would.

Judging by the downvotes, it seems that just about everyone agrees that my prediction is outlandish and impossible.
If it works out, it might be my greatest prediction ever.
