How specifically were we operating illegally?

A cover story for what was early DARPA. We explicitly lied about intent. Here's a snippet:
quote:

The proposed facility in northwestern Greenland was publicly touted as a “nuclear-powered Arctic research center” set in a wilderness of ice and snow. But the real reason for this Cold War base was to build and maintain a secret network of tunnels and missile silos connected by rail cars known as “Operation Iceworm.”

You can read a bit more here at History.com, but keep in mind that this is still pretty sanitized and more along the lines of the "official narrative". Denmark was deliberately kept in the dark about our true intent.
quote:

Did we really leave toxic materials behind?

What, specifically?

Again from the same article, so it's sanitized, but:
quote:

In 2016, a team of scientists reported that the rapid warming of the Greenland ice sheet could lead to the exposure of radioactive, toxic and human waste that remains at Camp Century, possibly leaking into the streams that lead to the ocean.

That's the very tip of the iceberg. The project was rapidly abandoned, and whistleblowers that had worked on the project, after time had passed, claimed that supervision basically left a bunch of radioactive and otherwise contaminated materials behind and plowed snow and ice over the entrances, expecting the whole city to be reclaimed by the ice in time and buried forever. Warming temperatures in the Arctic created their own plans, and the US is clearly panicking about what may be found.

I appreciate you asking and not just downvotiing like it's a conspiracy theory. This stuff happened, and was quite literally buried. Everything is connected. You can take the article for what it's worth, as it's the "official" story... or you can go down the rabbit hole of whistleblowers and get really pissed about how they claim we did things.

And if you think this stuff is crazy, look up "1500s map of Antarctica matches modern ground penetrating radar mapping" and go down that rabbit hole.

those that have been in charge for decades have definitely been the "bad guys". Trump is cleaning up their massive mess.

Not sure what he's accomplishing other than setting up some good damage control really, but at least he's being honest. Whether that's because he wants to be transparent or because nature is about to expose it for us, remains up to interpretation.

If the government was doing that 60 years ago, what are they doing now?

We've been the bad guys for a very long time.

Deep State has been the bad guys for a long time. Not US.
My grandfather, on his way to Europe to fly 72 bombing missions in a B-26, told me that they landed in Greenland to refuel for the final stage to England.

Greenland has been the mid-point for US to Europe since the Vikings.

I saw the episode on Discovery regarding the Nuke powered base in the ice. They did not realize ice moves.

Any current DUMBs would have to be under the ice. Who knows what the hell is going on up there?

I remember in elementary school reading the "Weekly Reader" story about the Glomar Explorer ship that Howard Hughes built. We read that it was going to be exploring and mining the ocean floor. Cool.

years later:

However, during the Cold War, the CIA conducted Project Azorian in 1974, a highly classified mission to recover the sunken Soviet submarine K-129 from the Pacific Ocean floor, approximately 1,800 miles northwest of Hawaii.

The operation used the specially built ship Hughes Glomar Explorer, which was publicly marketed as a deep-sea mining vessel. The ship successfully lifted a portion of the 132-foot-long submarine—about 38 feet of the bow—before the structure broke apart during the ascent, losing a significant section back to the ocean floor.
