re: Has politics always been this toxic?

I started paying attention to politics with Ike. In those days it was less toxic because each party had a LOT of centrists, especially in the Dem party. A good example is my current home district in Bossier. Mike Johnson is our rep. Back in the day it was Joe Waggoner who was also conservative. But he was a Dem. There are no Dems like that now.

Nope but once the blue dog Dems were ran out it has been a steady decline.

There is something to that though right?
The unrest in the 60s seemed much more explosive in terms of groups presenting as militia types and actually carrying firearms while wearing fatigues etc.
We also actually had a president assassinated and multiple other politicians were shot.
Not white knighting just trying to think through the toxicity now versus then.
it's not an apples to apples comparison. fully half the country wasnt ideologically diametrically opposed to the other half of the country in the 60s. generally speaking, most of the country still believed in American values and America as a good place.

Nope. There used to be some compromise. Hard to compromise when one side has a mental illness called TDS.

The better question would be. Have we always imported third world low IQ grifters and have them not assimilate?
In times past, the perils and trial inherent in settling the wilderness transformed people and we ended up with a uniquely American culture.
That American culture is worth saving, but the wilderness is gone. We MUST become more selective about how many and who we let in. And those we decide to let in must assimilate into American culture.
We are now a well developed welfare state. The worst of our country are using the welfare state to catapult themselves to power. The best example of that today is Minnesota. But you better believe the same grift is going on in many other places, courtesy of the democratic party. We must use ANY and ALL power necessary to break up this Anti-American party of Walz and the rest of the commie cabal in Minnesota. And then proceed on to any other infestation wherever it is found.

the seeds were planted long before Trump, this notion of conservatives not just having different political opinions but actually being evil and malicious. when your entire platform is that the opposition is actually evil, malicious, and literally out to do harm to people, how does that leave any room for compromise?
look at how they treat a guy like Fetterman who has actually tried to find common ground and compromise.

Yes. The period from 1832 - 1860 was pretty toxic that ended up in a little kerfuffle that killed 600,000 Americans and destroyed and entire region's economy.
I looked to no avail for an AI animation of this incident:
However, Charles Sumner had the last laugh as he was the Yankee in charge of Reconstruction.

Social media and the liberal media has made politics this toxic.
Posted on 1/8/26 at 11:34 am to Rankest
It was in the 60s/70s. We had a good run starting with Reagan

The internet has made their game much, much harder to obscure from us.
No. I doubt it has been this bad in our past. But do remember, we once had a civil war.

Ever heard of the Civil War?

It’s toxic because of the demented orange ruining our country

Politics has been toxic since the dawn of man when dudes got clubbed over the head with a femur for speaking out of line at a meeting of the elders.

IMO it really started with Revolution of '94. It was led by Newt Gingrich and netted a 54 seat gain by the R's. It was a broad idea to bring local politics to a national level and caught the D's completely off guard. It was also the first real time the R's marketed to the church going crowd with a family values type of campaign.
This is 100% where the war on Christianity started and the polarization begins between R's and D's.

A bunch of neurotic liberals took over social media and the internet circa 2008 and this is the result.
I was watching an interview with the Instagram CEO because he's a big soccer and Arsenal fan. If he hadn't said he had kids, I thought he would be just another fig leftist.
And he monitors his kids screen time. That's right, the CEO of a social media company doesn't even want his kids on it.

No. I tell my kids all the time about how great life was when I was a kid....
Solid example, the 1984 election. If you would have told me that year that 40 years later there would be a group of Americans that would encourage and celebrate having their own countrymen killed over political differences, no one would have believed it...
But here we are...
And shamefully, I have to admit I helped vote for people (Democrats) that led to this.
There was a guy named Abraham Lincoln, buddy...

Not sure if serious but the left didn't call Obama and Obama voters nazis for wanting a secure border, because that's what he ran on in 2008. he also was against gay marriage.
No, the problem is the left.

Before social media, young kids and adolescents were pretty much clueless about what was going on. Now you’ve got 15 and 16 year old political activists who are dedicated to whatever their cause is.
That was going on in the 50s, 60s, 70s... among urban and suburban kids in places who knew what was going on...
