I think folks are equating the US Federal Debt to the yearly US Federal budget deficit.

Two separate animals.

If our US government can get the yearly US Federal budget deficit under control, at least get it manageable, we can start getting back on track and maybe, just maybe, start paying down the US Federal debt.

That will probably never happen but c'mon. We can't go on racking up huge US Federal deficits every year.

Nobody posting here makes <500k/annually, so it’s easy to say you won’t take it when you’re not getting it due to high earning status.

I have no idea where the cut off income would even be but a one time 2K check isn't going to change anyone's life

Ironic this announcement is at the time the Supreme Court is on the verge of deciding if tariffs can continue. I think he's trying to use this as leverage for the Supreme Court to approve the tariffs so Americans get some relief. I don't think we'll see checks. Perhaps some tax deduction on your income taxes of sorts but no checks.

I assume it was a line out to the public to garner support for tariffs, possibly to persuade public opinion in an effort to persuade SCOTUS. Sometimes that works sometimes it doesn't.

God help us all if the courts would even consider this in their judgment

How could it not? The Feral Reserve printing more Monopoly money always deflates the real money already in circulation.

I remember the Barry Soetero years, some know it as the Obama years, with the Feral Reserve printing $80,000,000,000 (eighty billion dollars) a month and calling it quantitative easing. Heck, they even got rid of the used cars.

How did you like that for monetary policy? Would you like more of it?

Any handout from the government is destructive.

The only reason a "handout" is destructive is because the money is already spent.

If we had a balanced budget, a "handout" should still be a cause for concern because that means the gov't has too much of our money.

cash for clunkers, yeah that worked out so well. that was like hitler's volkswagon. no one could have a beater car only gay little obama cars

time to return to if stimie's go out it will add to the deficit and not go into Humana's pocket.

That was all Bernanke and he was appointed by Bush

But it's silly to politicize monetary policy and try to pin it all on a president

Use tariff money to pay down instead of $2,000/tax breaks. It would be a drop in the bucket, but at least it's something.
The debt has become too large to tackle, so no one's even trying to address it.

"Cash for Clunkers". designed to waste so many used car that mostly the poor and middle class would be driving.

Yup, the 0bama "Qualitative Easing" BS that buried us and set off that inflationary operation on the heels of bailing out the banks (too big to fail").

The infuriating thing is when these types of rumored checks do not go out, the folks on SNAP, Section 8 and every other program start spouting off about "the government never does anything for us."

Heard it this morning from some woman in her 60s when I was walking through a post office. Woman was on speaker talking about some Section 8 eligibility situation and the discussion quickly shifted to the $2,000.

She was not optimistic about getting her $2,000.

I think most rational people know this

But if we can grow GDP faster than we grow the debt over a long enough time frame we can get the debt/GDP ratio to a more reasonable level

I don't see that happening though

Good, that will do nothing but raise inflation.
