re: I think it's time for America to cut social security altogether (serious)

I'm all for removing it but they never will. The problem is that so many people are irresponsible and if they gave the money back for us to reinvest, half the people would blow it and wind up destitute.
SS is a safety net, but only for the undisciplined and financially illiterate. Anyone with a few brain cells could invest in the market and wind up with 5X the money that SS provides with the same investment

With the amount that a middle to upper middle class individual is donating to the American government for SS, millions of dollars per person are being lost over the course of a career.
You think that because you're confused.
SS is not, nor was it ever, an actual retirement program. That was just the sales job that was used to sell it to the public.
You can't opt out b/c it's not your money you get back, nor are the recipients drawing SS while you're paying in getting their money back. They are getting your money and you're getting younger taxpayer's money.
It's just an entitlement/welfare program—structured like any other entitlement program—with the exception that eligibility is not based on lack of wealth or income, it's based on age. It's like any other money you pay to the government in taxes that they use to fund any other entitlement program for people who are eligible.

They are going to have to do something to mitigate it.
Cutting it altogether wouldn't work, I don't think, unless you cut all entitlement programs. Otherwise you'd end up spending the same amount of money, you'd just funnel it through SNAP and welfare and whatever else, because people wouldn't use the taxes they saved to prepare for retirement.

Will they give me my money back?

How would this work exactly ? I had my first job outside of family stuff when i was 14 yrs old.. im mid 40s so have been in the workforce for over 30 yrs.. no 14, or 17, or 21 yr old has the presence of mind to say ‘I project ill have a net worth of x amount of dollars at 65 yrs old’, nor should they.. if you are young and dont know any better, let me just tell you that a TON of things can go wrong.. you can have a divorce or two clean you out.. you can have a business or two fail.. you can do everything right then get Madoff’d or Stafford’d…. We NEED that safety net of SS because you just never know what life will throw at you .

Right now the projection is that SS will be cut by 15% in literally only 7 or 8 yrs from now if nothing changes… I will make a bold prediction that by the time i am able to collect SS in circa 18 or 20 yrs from now, there is NO WAY it will still be available at 62 yrs old (early) or 65 yrs old (standard) as it is now.. which totally sucks b/c while im not depending on it to fund my retirement, there is a huge amount of ageism in the workforce once you hit about 50 yrs old…. So it’s gonna be really hard to tell those 50 yr olds, who maybe haven’t succeeded in having their own business or whatever, and having a difficult time finding a job ‘Sorry, you gotta work another 20 years’ before they can collect what they paid into SS .. i dont have the solution, but i definitely see the problem and hoping something can be figured out .

So, are you ok with the govt. stealing the money paid by your parents and grandparents and giving it to those who won't work? Give it to people who have entered our country illegally. Social security should have a huge surplus. Most people that pay in, die before ever receiving a cent. The biggest portion of the national debt is owed to the dept. of Social Security because that is where they so called borrowed the money from. We paid that money into a program that guaranteed us a living wage when we were to old to work. I started working at 16. They too my money for my entire career.

Like the 45 million illegals aliens that strolled into the country?

Well then what would you call it ? It is a safety net, meaning, again, you dont want to put all ur eggs in that basket, and depend on the government to take care of you in your old age.. BUT if you are like many many people who wind up *needing* that money in retirement, you can go and ‘live like a king’ in Mexico or in South America or in Asia or any number of other countries on just SS… not saying that *you* have to do that, or that it’s right for everyone- but my plan is to stay outside of the USA once retired and live really , really well on just my 401k and SS- but if the stock market were to somehow crash and stay crashed (not likely)- i could do it on just SS .

Just scrap the whole thing. I don’t even care if I get what I put in back I would take that all day if they’d do it
It’s a scam

Boomers aren’t the problem that is going to enslave you, rather they are the demographic that fights to uphold what’s left of our Freedoms via the Constitutional Republic. The open Border and ‘social security’ to all regardless of contributions to the System that they will vote to maintain until the “engineered collapse” and “fundamental change” to a Global Fascist State. The Boomers will be gone soon and those left will “get the government that they deserve”. Good luck. With reasoning like OP you’ll need it.

A couple who had good jobs and a long career can have a SS benefit of up to 60 grand a year. That ain't nothing.

What a little self serving douche. I am pretty sure you would be singing a different tune if you had paid $200K over the last 30 years....a tax of 6.2%.
It should have been our own personal account this entire time, that we could invest with, but then the govt couldn't get their hands on it then. Give me my money back and I'm good, even with no interest.

Tells me you are a low earner who hasn't paid shite into it. Again, you would be singing a different tune if you had paid a couple hundred thousand into it. This new generation are nothing but selfish, with poor work habits.

Cutting no way especially after people my age has been paying into for almost 50 years. There is government waste probably of 25-30%, possibly even more, with medical providers who force expenditures throughout the system.

It would be MY (THEIR) money that they worked for all these years, to blow. This is BS. It is easy to tell who has no morals....again, it is the principle of paying in all these years (no I won't get rich here in a few years, but at least $3,500 a month or so on top of what I've saved. But since you guys have to blood in the game, you don't care if it screws others over.
If Cackles is allowed to give all illegals SS....it will finally destroy it.
