Except that's not what happened. Trump had the National Archives people at Mar-a-Lago back in January. They took some documents but left the rest. Why would they leave Classified documents there?
There's a formal subpoena process for this, they completely disdained that for the shock and awe of a night-time raid.
This is little different than what we saw with Roger Stone or Paul Manafort where attack helicopters and agents in riot gear stormed the place as if they were hardened gang leaders with hundreds of violent crimes on their criminal records instead of non-violent citizens who were being served search warrants.
Make no mistake, these have all been shows of force to send a message (especially when contrasted against how Hillary and her people were charged with nothing while operating an illegal mail server and deleting the data on it and their phones in order to avoid FOIAs, Sandy Berger who got just a slap on the wrist for smuggling documents out of the National Archive, the entire Russian Collusion "investigation" into what was eventually shown to be an easily disproven hoax and the "Russian disinformation" laptop of Hunter Biden which shows him committing criminal acts and possibly ties his father ("Pedo Pete") to some of them).
That message is "play ball with the DC establishment, which is moving ever Left-ward, or face the consequences".
Are you okay with that?

Trump's attorneys have been speaking with the DOJ about these documents since at least June. Probably earlier.
Either they weren't handing over the documents, or the FBI over reacted.
