They aren't big cities but Shreveport and Baton Rouge were very nice places to live in the 1960s.

My farm (very rural) is extremely safe, however I usually carry a rifle. For targets of opportunity, feral hogs.

But I am certainly not scared I'm going to be murdered by some looter. The only thieves I have are snakes who steal eggs.

Breakfast every morning on the back porch watching sun rise. Whiskey drink every evening watching sun set.

Paradise.

And downtown is like 4 streets and they cant get it under control

That’s crazy. I was there about 6 years ago and there were some homeless but they were pretty limited and gaslamp was still thriving. Loved my trips there.

I think y’all even had a Republican mayor back then. Sad to hear it’s gone to crap.

That quality of life point varies widely based on what you are looking for.

Add Houston to your list of shitholes. More violent crimes this year than Chiraq, activists judged and DA not to mention our corrupt Mayor

I read an article where they were able to point to 10 deaths from no bond releasees to judges that were voted in in 2018 in Harris county.

Damn was hopeful San Diego was the last city out there holding strong, taking a trip back soon. Probably my favorite city outside of Texas.

The wife and I went out to San Diego a couple summers ago and it was a homeless infested smelly shithole.

Memphis has deteriorated considerably. People don't realize how far this city has declined in the past 30 years. It's really sad and I don't foresee any improvement likely in the coming years.

I’ll never forget the joy I had the day my moving truck crossed the River on the move back to Arkansas.

My wife and I lived in Nutbush for 3 years working with inner city kids. The kids were great, their parents and older siblings breaking into our house 9 times was not. The straw that broke the camels back was the day they shut my power off with me in the house. Caught them at the back door but couldn’t get a shot off in time. Moved the next month.

I learned a lot about poverty during those years and the government handouts are the cause of 99% of the inner city problems.

Baton Rouge
Shreveport
Jackson, MS
B'Ham
Memphis
And so on.....

To me WizardSleeve has the most accurate answer and if you include the fact that once the government got involved with give away programs, this encouraged people to locate as close to the government administration offices as they could so they could walk or take public transportation to the government offices to get their government give away provisions. It’s been this way since there used to be commodities given away and then liberals decided that it was demeaning to call free stuff given to free loaders “commodities”, it might hurt their feelings, so they started changing the program names and removing any stigma associated with welfare and took away any incentive free loaders had to work and pull themselves up.
As the government give away stuff has grown and grown, it’s given free loaders more money and benefits so now they can buy cars, get homes further away from downtown government offices and get free utilities, free medical, free iPhones, free everything so they are able to spread further out into housing that once was sought after subdivisions, thus bringing down the property values in these areas and causing them to be run down and devalued just like they did the downtown areas, this continues to spread further and further out as real estate speculators buy up devalued properties and rent them to the government for 3-4 times more than they could rent them to an individual for, the government places “underprivileged” groups in these areas, thus further dragging the property values down and causing the cycle to continue and propagate. This is how the process has torn down every large city and is doing the same thing to smaller cities but actually destroying the smaller cities because they don’t have enough population or infrastructure to be able to recover from the cancerous welfare spread.

I was down there less than 2 years ago and downtown didn't seem bad. Is this a covid phenomenon? Is it Denver bad yet? That place went from 0-100 faster than I've ever seen. SLC is on deck.

The human condition requires a healthy dose of pastoralism and immersion in nature. Cities rob you of that.

Having lived in nyc and Seattle I'll disagree. You can spend a whole day walking around a park in nyc and forget you're in the city. Seattle you're a fifteen minute trip to absolute beauty.

We tend to demonize cities because they lean left but you can have a pretty rich life in one, it will just be more expensive.

Nyc was my favorite city in the world and now i like it about as much as Gotham City. It’s a shame people like DeBozo get a chance to ruin such once great cities.
