So all I have to do is move to a DSLD home in a far flung suburb in an economic wasteland of a state? Great example
There are plenty of places in the country with cheap real estate.

I mean yeah, basically.

I bet most millenials in their 30's wouldn't even think about voting for Bernie. The 20 year old's having a really hard time paying off their debt likely will.

are you also voting for him because you hate that boomers have accumulated all the wealth and you have none?
Well damn I missed out as a boomer.

Again, there's a reason for that. There's simply no demand. Unless you have a non-employed/independent source of income or capital, you simply can't decide to move to bumfrick.

This is about to be a fun shitstorm.

This leans in to some of the problem - in most cases, it's simply not possible to have anything but a lower-middle class existence outside of commuting distance to a city. Sure, there are exceptions, but that's generally how it goes down.
Couple that with the fact that these houses (i'm speaking to my specific market) are largely rundown and drastically out of date. The amount of work that is required on them, coupled with what is being asked for them is absurd.

There is so much demand for urban or urban-adjacent real estate that the markets are skewing tremendously in both directions. You can live out in the sticks for next to nothing - but how will you afford it? You can live in the city or commute from nearby - but you'll pay out the nose for it.
Housing that's in higher demand will always be relatively more expensive to younger people because they generally are making less money.
I couldn't afford my current house when I was 27 so I bought a cheap house 45 minutes from my office. It wasn't where I wanted to live but it was what I could afford at the time.

haha I like the discourse, who wants to just sit around agreeing with each other all day? I'm not losing any sleep over random people I don't know getting mad about my political beliefs. lord know I ain't mad about y'alls (unless you support bloomberg then in that case I am actually IRL very upset)

if given a choice between
1. dying after a meteorite strikes earth or
2. voting for Trump
I’d pick#1, that’s why.

Yep, Bham.
I know there is good stuff out there, just speaking to the overall majority of what is on the market. I went and saw a house a while back with some decently serious foundation issues, still asking for $350k and not even acknowledging the issues. Not even mentioning the kitchen appliance overhaul that would need to happen.

I don't remember if you live in Birmingham or not but I married a gump from that area.
Are you telling me there aren't cheap places to live within driving distance of the city? There absolutely are in places like Maytown, Adamsville etc. It might not be where a young person wants to live but cheaper real estate does exist in most of the South/Midwest.

If I had to work in the Ham, I'd probably live in Blount or St. Clair, maybe even Cullman.
I know having kids changes that decision quite a bit. I wouldn't want my children going to those districts.
I live in Limestone County. Real estate here is absolutely fricking booming. New industrial expansion, plus the general growth of Huntsville, has made the market pretty impressive. I live in an inherited house in my hometown but I am looking to develop some land that hasn't been grabbed up by investors. The growth prospects here are phenomenal.

That's about where you have to look for anything reasonable, which itself isn't reasonable
I'll save up for now, in a nice but affordable apartment and wait for the prices to finally come down.

I should throw in the caveat of still having large debt and/or no realistic opportunity to make a really good wage.

my only debt is the house I just bought tbh
and half the jeep I'm still paying on that I bought two years ago
