Often the ISPs collude, for example, Company A approaches company B and says if you don't compete with us in Area A then we won't compete with you in Area B.

Example A: My cousin lives .25 miles from a Charter internet node - he can only get CenturyLINK ADSL.. because 5 years ago Charter and CenturyLINK came together while they expanded in his neighborhood which has one road going in. Charter said "we get the houses on the right," CenturyLINK said "we get the houses on the left" .. they signed this 25 year agreement and went on their way ..

This will never change, and this will get only worst now that ISPs KNOW they WANT to be the only option, so they can gouge you even MORE, because they ARE your only option! CAPITALISM BITCHES!

I thought of posting this already, but with the way this thread has gone I expect plenty will say that that is their choice.

If you have satellite you have three options that I'm aware of: hughesnet, direct and dish.

In the same way the Patriot Act is patriotic.

Interesting video on the subject

A sufficiently powerful corporation can begin to act very much like a state.

Satellite internet is not a serious alternative to a wired high speed connection. Latency will be 300ms+ easily. HughesNet also has a data cap ranging from 10Gb-40Gb per month depending on the package. I am unsure of the other two regarding data caps. Fact is satellite internet is for people whose only other option is dial-up.

I serious about this.

If current ISPs don't meet customers demands, others will pop up.

Net Neutrality is the principle that no corporation or state authority can censor, slow down, block, or privilege certain content on the web. It's the basis for what has made the Internet a place for creativity, free speech, and innovation.

I love how you've bought into this flat out fricking lie from the FCC. Net neutrality as proposed by the government (which has been slapped down twice now in the courts) is exactly about having state control of the internet.

Cool that you're on the same side as freedom / free speech haters like Vladimir Putin though who love the idea of the US taking reigns over the internet. It gives them an out when someone criticizes their own squashing of free speech and open internet.

yes, they have just now realized that they don't want any competition

There is no such thing as price gouging and if statists would let the market work then you're current ISP wouldn't be your only option.

I hate to break it to the folks in favor of net neutrality...the internet ain't free. Get over it. Pony up if you want the highest baud rate and unlimited data transmissions.

I don't have much experience with 4G other than the little bit I use it on my phone. Speeds are OK, but all of the issues that are present with any wireless internet still exist. Latency would be better than satellite since they only have to travel to the cell towers and not satellites in orbit.
