I have been to Slidell and I imagine it's pretty similar. There's just not much there besides chain stores.
Obviously never been to any of the impressive estates along bayous Liberty and Bonfouca that attract visitors from around the world to their lawn parties.
The Bond movie Live and Let Die with its boat chase scenes gives a great look into the area.
An area that's twenty-five minutes from Orleans with an ambience and quality of life significantly superior to Orleans.
An area that made its mind up quite awhile ago that they would never allow it to slouch into what Orleans has become.

I honestly fear for my sons once they get to the high school ages.
They will inevitably be in a situation with Nola culcha and probably get jumped and stomped on.
And then I’ll be in the newspaper the next day for burning down an entire neighborhood

Also noticed when a road gets repaved it’s done in a couple of weeks. They don’t rip the shite up then leave it for 6 months.
The city redid the street I'm living on. Took them 2 years to do my block-----one fricking block. Six months would have been a dream come true.

How old are you, kid? And your address doesn’t command respect.

Even though have been rigidly fixed here and dug in like a badger, certainly understand someone with a young, growing family wanting to get the hell out - particularly those with girls.
Contrary to what some successfully conditioned pollyannas might try to convince you of, there's no real political or cultural solution for this place, other than maybe a worse catastrophe than Katrina - some Black Swan event - and just start over.

The demographics assure this
We are not alone though.
Jackson MS
Memphis TN
Baton Rouge, LA
New Orleans, LA
Atalanta, GA
These places are all dying a slow death. You’ll see negative growth in all very soon. Which will only perpetuate the problem. Eventually they will not have clean water to drink and will be on rolling blackouts etc. they will also have to be taken over by the state or federal governments.
I’m not Nostradamus or anything though.

I think New Orleans is at a crossroads. The next mayoral election is pivotal.
I think there is a large constituent of Orleanians who hope that Cantrell is an outlier and the next mayor will set the path on a more lawful track.
They hope that a Moreno or JP Morrell will be the choice which can begin a new era.
So they wait in desperation.
If, however, Jason Williams gets elected, it will be an indication that things have gotten to a breaking point. Crime will worsen. Property values will crater as citizens move out at any cost.
The next election is going to be huge

The median household income is less than 50k. Its a quickly evolving disaster.
its more like Jackson with California real estate prices.

Not just for New Orleans. For the entire area.
If Williams wins, I’ll probably take advantage of some New Orleanians moving to old Metairie as my last chance to rake in profits from real estate from this area. It’s time to leave if that happens because values will skyrocket, then slowly fall. Look at Jackson MS

One of these (although it deals with some of the same issues) is not really like the others. It had the ability to more entrench itself as a commercially viable metro, such that it will sustain.
The rest really have no reason to exist anymore as viable population centers.

Covington proper (inside the city boundaries) is a shithole. The convenience of going to great restaurants and non-stop live music in electric carts is totally overrated. The history and historic architecture pales compared to New Orleans. On top of that the PD is constantly arresting felons and taking away their guns. Then, the DA and court system incarcerate the bad guys.
Ignore the magazines like Southern Living that rank it one of the best small cities of the South. I suggest, if possible, avoid Covington.
However, I do hear the mayor is pretty cool.

As someone who was born and raised in the 504, there’s obviously pride there. But when I moved and saw other places, New Orleans’ problems really exposed itself. The crime, the awful education system, the inept “leadership,” and the lack of solutions to all of it really makes the city undesirable to live in.
Most people who live there now are either transplants or just those who can’t move because it’s home to them. But the reality is that the city is getting worse by the day. And it’s almost to the point of no return.

No amount of money would put me in Houston. Its a hotter, more humid LA without the scenery.

Not really sure I understand what makes NOLA different from other major cities other than the crime
Conservatives live in all sorts of places like Seattle and Austin because of economic opportunity and quality of life
