What is the actual purpose of NPR in this day and age? I get that 50 years ago it may have made sense, but we are saturated in news everywhere now.

NPR, honestly, USED to be this. And several of their programs still are.
But they've added more and more programs as of late that certainly had a political bent. I tuned into their debate coverage expecting it to be neutral, and honestly it simply was not.
So, yes, they used to be neutral. They've migrated away from neutrality though. You can find some programs that are still raw news with no slant, but I fear those will eventually get run off the air.

They are biased. Everything is in some way. But they have been far less prone to shock entertainment and at least present an analytical and intelligent form. It isn't the same angry yelling and insults as CNN and fox news that makes them non consumable.
