Related to that: one of the biggest myths with EMP is this notion of something that takes out any circuitry. You need an antenna to conduct the voltage, around at minimum 24-36 inches in length. My iPhone X, as sophisticated as it is, will be completely unfazed by an EMP, simply because it can’t conduct sufficient voltages. It just won’t have cell towers to connect to anymore. So if you unplug the battery, and isolate the entertainment circuitry (particularly the radio antenna), and the ground, you should be fine. Granted, it’s doubtful you’ll have that done when the EMP actually hits.
If a solar EMP destroyed the telegraph system in 1859 I'll go with the experts/scientists who predict we'd be fricked if such an event struck the earth today.

It's times like this where I appreciate my down home country roots.
And maybe it's the old man coming out in me, but I think I'd enjoy some time off the grid.

We should completely nuke anyone that EMP's us.
We never should've let it get to a point where an EMP could do this much damage to us.

The problem is that a properly planned EMP can be almost impossible to be preemptive about.
Might have 90-120 seconds of warning, if that if the nuke is already in orbit posing as a benign satellite.
So you’ll have mass confusion, broken C&C, and an ambiguous source.

More than that.
I always get amused with the confidence that emerges in this threads.
There is a big arse difference between occasionally bagging a kill and relying on it for subsidence for an extended period.
And that’s ignoring side folklore making basics like soap.
Essentially we would abruptly move from a wasteful consumer based lifestyle to a waste NOTHING zero sum one.
Sure, people will survive.
But the numbers aren’t solely based on “Dem city folk don’t know how to hunt”
The country literally can’t support that many people on that level of food gathering.

Agree. I was taught as a kid how to be self sufficient if needed. Growing up on a farm as much as I hated it, taught me valuable life lessons.

Most conservatives too. Life-saving apparatuses that use electricity are apolitical.

Follow up to the above, regardless of the ability, the most the entire continental US can support in the absence of modern technology: tractors, pesticides, artificial fertilizers, etc is around 50 million.
And that’s if every inch of usable land is held by those who know how to use it.

Agree completely. Suburb people are essentially in the same boat as urban, I think it's just a matter of time it takes to feel the effects. Effects meaning everything from chaos and lawlessness to shortage of supplies esp food.
Urban almost immediately. Suburban, maybe a few weeks. Even rural people, although largely insulated from the chaos would feel other effects pretty soon unless they are well stocked, or already production-oriented (farms, crops) or are able to adapt to production with relatively ease. For example, my immediate family (rural) would probably be a mixture of those three, i.e. Somewhat stocked up, somewhat already producing (garden, ponds, woods, access to livestock) and able to start growing more crops and raising livestock pretty quickly.
But yeah just because someone is rural doesn't guarantee an easy path, nothing does except perhaps for the prepper people that are extremely prepared and stocked up.

No doubt this setting has the best chance for success, but just to illustrate the point of how consumer driven we are and it being so ingrained that we don’t even think about it:
Do they have any skill in reclaiming seeds?
Or do they always just go to the store and buy more?
