They were designed prior to mass media for voters to compare candidates in person. Then we went to TV, and that actually cost Nixon the WH, because he didnt wear makeup like JFK did. Then the debates because biased leftist propaganda pieces
If a candidate cant get his message out via the Internet and public appearances, a debate isnt changing anything. They are outdated forms of campaigning
Just like Iowa has become, doing all those cornball things trying to win, only to never factor again in the primaries
